Del Castillo scores twice as Knights secure 3-1 win at Daemen College

AMHERST, N.Y. –  The No. 18-ranked Gannon University men's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak alive at eight consecutive games with Wednesday's 3-1 non-conference victory at Daemen College. The Golden Knights had to come from behind after Daemen took the lead just three minutes into the game, but the tying goal from Bek Nurlanbek (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Loughborough College) in the 13th minute and a second-half brace from Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) turned the tide back in Gannon's favor. The Knights' overall record improves to 11-1-1 (4-0-1 PSAC) while Daemen College falls to 3-9 overall (1-5 ECC.) Del Castillo has now tallied eight goals this season, equaling his total from the spring of 2021 (in just six games) and one shy of the nine he scored in 21 games as a freshman in 2019.

Statistically, Gannon bested Daemen in shots (16-11), shots on goal (9-7), and corner kicks (4-0)—but it was the Wildcats who struck first. In the third minute, Arthur Djengue dialed up a shot from about 25 yards out that found the top left corner of the goal past the outstretched hands of Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.).

Not to be unnerved, the Knights kept up the pressure. In the 13th minute, Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) received the ball down the left wing and dribbled his way towards the center of the field at the top of the penalty box. He managed to get a shot off despite being surrounded by four defenders, but a Daemen player managed to block it with his foot. Del Castillo fought for the resulting loose ball in the box and it rolled right to Nurlanbek, who smashed home his third goal of the season to equalize the game 1-1.

Nurlanbek was also the genesis for Gannon's second goal in the 54th minute, taking a free kick from the left side that dipped and swerved into the box, rebounding off the keeper right to Del Castillo, who took two touches in mid-air and poked the ball into the net for the go-ahead goal. The Knights added the third goal in the 64th minute, as freshman Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) drove forward down the middle of the pitch and slid the ball to Del Castillo on his left. Sergio took a touch from the top of the box and launched the ball into the top right corner to secure the 3-1 victory.

The Golden Knights return home to once again resume PSAC play this Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. versus Cal U (2-7-2 overall, 1-3-1 PSAC.) The two teams met back on Oct. 2 at Cal U, with Gannon earning a 2-1 result.
