Knox finds lone goal of game in water-logged 1-0 victory over Cal U

ERIE, Pa. – In a match frequently greeted by downpours of lake-effect rain, the No. 18-ranked Gannon University men's soccer team only needed a goal from Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) in the sixth minute to best Cal U, 1-0. Gannon's PSAC West-leading conference record improves to 5-0-1 (12-1-1 overall) while Cal U falls to 1-4-1 in the PSAC West and 2-8-2 overall. The Golden Knights have won eight of the last nine matches and have not lost since Sept. 18.

Gannon started the game extremely bright, with the squad's short passes finding feet and causing havoc in the Cal U defense. Some beautiful ball movement led to the only goal of the game, when Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) drew three defenders about twenty five yards out from goal, dribbled past two of them, and threaded a ball through to Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) in the box. Katsande took an incredible touch to redirect it towards a charging Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School), who put his foot through the ball and deposited it into the net. Knox has scored in four of the last six games and is tied for the PSAC lead in game-winning goals with teammate Del Castillo (each with three.) Sergio and Katsande's assists were both the players' second of the 2021 campaign.

The ball was bouncing around wildly on the McConnell Family Stadium turf due to the poor conditions, and both teams found chances to score but could not convert the final product. Gannon held an overall shot lead in the game, 17-10, and earned four corner kicks to Cal U's three. Six yellow cards were shown to the Vulcans and none to the Knights.

Only four regular-season matches remain for Gannon, and three of them are at home. Next up is the final road match of the fall: Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Pitt-Johnstown (1-10-1 overall, 0-6 PSAC West), followed by a trio of home contests versus Seton Hill (Oct. 30 and senior day for the Knights), Mercyhurst (Nov. 3), and Slippery Rock (Nov. 6.)
