Men's Water Polo Suffers Pair of Tight Losses in Second Day of Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Gannon men's water polo team wrapped up action in the Harvard Invitational with a pair of games. The Golden Knights would suffer a pair of tough setbacks on Sunday. In a rematch of a season-opening contest that Brown won by seven goals, Gannon fell by a 9-7 score. Later in the day MIT needed overtime to edge the Golden Knights 12-11.

Gannon will take a 7-8 record into next weekend's CWPA Division II Championship, set for Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24. Mercyhurst is hosting the event at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center. The tournament schedule will be announced this week.

BROWN 9, GANNON 7
While suffering the defeat, it showed how far the Golden Knights have come after opening the season with a 17-10 loss to Brown (12-8). Gannon led for much of the game, which saw neither team lead by more than two goals. Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) opened the scoring with a goal 45 seconds into the contest. The Bears knotted the sore at 1-1 four minutes later, but the Golden Knights picked up goals from Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) and Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) for a 3-1 advantage early in the second period. The teams exchanged goals, with Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finding the back of the net at the 5:04 mark for a 4-2 lead. A pair of Brown goals in the final three minutes knotted the score at 4-4 at halftime. Gannon regained the lead at the 5:51 mark on a goal by David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschool), but Brown answered 22 seconds later to tie the game. Back came the Golden Knights, with Vlad Mickic's (Subotica, Serbia /Nikola Tesla) goal giving Gannon a 6-5 lead with 4:01 left in the third quarter. Brown would score the next two goals to go ahead for the first time at 7-6 with 1:49 remaining in the period. Gannon forged the fifth tie of the game 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, courtesy of Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben). Unfortunately, the Gannon attack was unable to score again. Brown grabbed the lead for good at the 5:21 mark, and added an insurance goal just over two minutes later.

MIT 12, GANNON 11 OT
In another tight match, Gannon fell behind by three goals early before rallying to take a goal lead at 8-7 late in the third period. Four ties would ensue forcing an overtime.  MIT would jump out to a 5-2 lead early in the second period. Goals by Ivan Mickic and Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) pulled the Golden Knights to within 5-4, but the Engineers would tally a goal with one second left for a 6-4 lead at the half. After falling behind 7-5 in the third period, Gannon tallied three straight goals – by Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Mickic and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) – to grab its second lead at 8-7 with 1:02 left in the period. MIT once again stunned the Golden Knights with a goal with a second showing to knot the score. The Engineers would take a goal lead on three occasions in the final period, with Gannon answering on each occasion. Marjanovic scored his third goal of the day with 1:47 remaining to force overtime. MIT's Kyle Sandell would score the game-winning goal 15 seconds into the first overtime period, and neither team would score after that. Marjanovic and Mickic led Gannon with three goals apiece, with Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) and Squeglia adding a pair of goals. Robert Bolmanski (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) scored one goal.
