Golden Knights Earn Split at Harvard Invitational with Win over Connecticut College

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Gannon men's water polo team split a pair of matches on Saturday while competing in the first day of the Harvard Invitational. The Golden Knights dropped a 16-5 decision to 13th-ranked Harvard in their first game, but came back with an impressive showing against Connecticut College, winning 14-5.

Gannon is now 7-6 on the season with a pair of contents in Harvard's Blodgett Pool on Sunday. The Golden Knights face Brown in a rematch of their season-opening contest at 10:30 a.m. before wrapping up against MIT at 2:15 p.m.  

#13 HARVARD 16, GANNON 5
Five different players scored a goal for the Golden Knights as they fell to the 13th-ranked Crimson. Harvard (14-2) would score the first two goals before Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) accounted for Gannon's first goal at 3:16 of the first quarter. Harvard would add three more goals in the period for a 5-1 lead. Gannon's Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) opened the scoring in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Crimson scored the final seven goals of the period to hold a 12-2 lead at the half, then added an eighth straight to open the third quarter. Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) stopped the run with a goal at the 1:50 mark, and David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschool) made it back-to-back goals as the third period ended at 14-4. Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored in the fourth period for the Golden Knights with 1:22 remaining.  

GANNON 14, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 5
The Golden Knights jumped out to a big early lead, affording head coach Shane Unger the freedom to substitute liberally. A total of 11 different players would score. Gannon scored the first six goals of the game, with Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia /Nikola Tesla) accounting for two and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)), Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.), Tony Squegliua and Tin Baer one apiece. Gannon would lead 7-1 after one period as Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) capped the first quarter with a score. The lead grew to 10-2 at the half as Matt Harkrader (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) scored, followed by a pair of goals by Grant Simeone (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Each team tallied a goal in the third quarter, with Jordan Kraus (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scoring for the Golden Knights. Kraus added a second goal to start the fourth quarter, and Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Garrett Takei (Fremont, Calif./Irvington) concluded the Gannon scoring.
