Fribourg's Four Goals Lead Gannon in 11-10 Loss to Salem

O'FALLON, Ill. – The Gannon University men's water polo team wrapped up action this morning in the CWPA Weekend hosted by McKendree University. The Golden Knight are now 6-5 after dropping an 11-10 decision to Salem in a non-conference game.

Gannon would lead just twice in the contest although neither team ever held more than a three-goal lead.   The Golden Knights took a 2-0 lead on goals by Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) at 7:33 and David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschool) at the 4:29 mark. Salem knotted the score at 2-2 before Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) gave Gannon a 3-2 lead after one period with the goal with 16 seconds left.

Salem would score the only two goals in the second period for a 4-3 halftime lead, and opened the third period with a goal to make it 5-3. Gallion stopped the run with his second goal with 7:10 left in the period to cut the deficit to 5-4. Salem took the largest advantage for either team with a pair of goals to bring the score to 7-4, before Robert Bolmanski (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) brought it to 7-5 with 16 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Golden Knights erased the three-goal deficit early in the final stanza with goals 17 seconds apart. Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) scored the first goal at 6:24, and at 6:07 the score was tied at 7-7 on a Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) goal. In fact, the freshman would score Gannon's final four goals.

Salem retook the lead with back-to-back goals a minute apart. Back came the Golden Knights, with Fribourg scoring at the 4:30 mark and again with 3:58 left. Salem grabbed a 10-9 lead at 2:36, but Fribourg's fourth goal knotted the score at 10-10 with 2:23 to play. Unfortunately, Chad Rawley accounted for the game-winner for Salem, scoring his fourth goal with 1:01 remaining.

Final statistics were not available last night for the 11-8 setback to McKendree. Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) led Gannon with 3 goals, with Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben), Kaverman, Schmitzerle, Bolmanski, and Squeglia scoring one goal apiece. Kaverman's goal with 4:41 remaining tied the score at 8-8, but McKendree scored the game-winner with 3:55 to play, and added two insurance goals in the final two-and-a-half minutes.

Gannon will return to action on Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17 at the Harvard Invitational. The Golden Knights play Harvard and Connecticut College on Saturday, followed by contests against Brown and Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sunday.
