KEY SEQUENCE
  • Palm Beach Atlantic crept back into the game to make it a 10-9 Gannon lead with a score 11 seconds before the break. That was the tightest the game had been since the first three minutes, but Gannon responded by scoring the first four goals of the second half to push the advantage back out to 14-9, and it wouldn't get closer than three the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon started out on a tear, getting a goal 16 seconds in from Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell), then finishes from Christina Zeher (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Jess Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) for a 3-0 lead less than four minutes in. The Knights would find the back of the net on each of their first eight shots from the field to go up 8-3 midway through the first half.
  • The Sailfish got it to within 8-5, then three saves from PBA goalie Abigal Nehring helped them pull to within 8-6, but Tufts converted a free position at the 6:37 mark to make it back to a three-goal margin at 9-6. A save from Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) started an attack the other way, and Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) finished it off for a 10-6 lead, but the hosts scored the next three to make it a one-goal game at the halftime intermission.
  • With Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in goal for the second half, a big save started the Knights the other way, with Courtney Young (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) making it 11-9 just over two minutes into the half. An Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) finish just over a minute later pushed it out to a three-score lead, and some solid defense allowed Tufts to convert for a 14-9 advantage with 17:04 on the clock.
  • PBA scored the next two to creep back within three, but Tufts got the ensuing draw control, missed just wide on a free position, but followed that up with another free position that she finished to make it 15-11. Jacobs won a scrum in front of the goal, and put another in the back of the net for a five-goal margin with 10 minutes to play.
  • Two quick goals from the Sailfish got it back to within four, but a draw control from Eileen Kehrig (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led to a finish from Rotondo. PBA kept things in their offense end for much of the final minutes, but their shots didn't find the frame until the final moments to get the final spread.

GAME NOTES

  • Tufts notched a career-high six goals, and has put up 14 goals to lead the team in the early part of the season.
  • Young netted four goals, and has put up at least that number in each of the first three games this season.
  • Jacobs turned in three scores, and also added seven draw controls and two ground balls.
