Eight-Goal Run Lifts Gannon To Victory Over Ursuline To Stay Unbeaten

KEY SEQUENCE

Gannon got on the board in the first minute of the game, but things didn't quite shake out perfectly over the next few minutes. Ursuline only managed to tie it up, and the Knights called a timeout. Whatever was said during the stoppage worked though, as Gannon ripped off the next eight goals to go up 9-1, and the Knights led by at least seven the rest of the way

HOW IT HAPPENED

Gannon won the opening draw and went right down the field for a score, as Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) found Courtney Young (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) for the first goal. The next six minutes saw now scoring, and a turnover by Gannon on the offensive end led to the equalizer for the Arrows on a flurry in front of the goal at the 22:33 mark of the first half.
Ursuline did win the draw coming out of the Gannon timeout, but the Knights got a turnover, and Rotondo converted a free position to put them back ahead. One more from Rotondo, followed by another finish from Young, quickly made it 4-1 just 10 minutes in.
With the guests up 6-1, Ursuline got its first attempts since its goal, but Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) stopped a free position and the follow-up attempt, and Gannon answered with a score from Erica Weir (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport). Another tally from Rotondo on a free position was followed five minutes later by a man-up opportunity that Christina Zeher (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) cashed in on to cap the 8-0 run with 8:03 left on the clock.
Ursuline managed their second goal of the game, just over a minute later, but Gannon answered with the final four goals of the opening half from four different players to head to the break up 13-2.
Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) got the opening draw of the second half, and posted the Knights' 14th goal of the game just 35 seconds into the period. With a running clock in play, it took over nine minutes for another score, but Lindsay Ball (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) netted it for Gannon with 20 minutes remaining.
Ursuline got a bit of momentum from there, scoring the next four goals, including the final one on a man-up chance with 8:21 to play. Rontodo quickly returned it to a 10-goal margin 90 seconds later though, and Gannon would score the final two tallies of the game.

GAME NOTES

Gannon moved to 2-0 on the season with the 12-goal victory. The Knights are 2-0 to start a season for the first time since starting the 2011 season 3-0.
The Knights took 45 total shots, and put 32 on goal. That matched the 32 shots on goal against Wheeling Jesuit last season, and neither mark has been topped since Gannon shot 46 times and put 34 on goal against Lake Erie on March 19, 2015.
Rotondo put up five goals and three assists in the game, and already has 13 points on the season with eight goals and five assists.
Young followed up her five-goal season debut Saturday with four more on Monday, and has nine goals on just 14 total shots on the season.

UP NEXT

Gannon will head south to Florida for spring break, beginning Saturday with a game at Palm Beach Atlantic.
The 2 p.m. first draw from the PBA Lacrosse Field will feature live video and live stats.
Gannon won the only other meeting between the two teams, taking the 2018 season opener, 21-6.
