AROUND THE LEAGUE
SERIES HISTORY
  • All-Time Series: Tied 2-2
  • First Meeting: Nov. 13, 2010, Kutztown 27, Gannon 24
  • Last Meeting: Sept. 15, 2018, Kutztown 48, Gannon 33
  • How It Happened: Gannon used three touchdowns in the first 21 minutes of the game to build a lead against the Golden Bears at McConnell Family Stadium, but Kutztown closed with a flurry in the fourth quarter, netting the game's final 26 points to pull away. Melvin Blanks (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) ran for 91 yards on 15 carries, Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) pulled in nine catches for 77 yards, and Malik Bridgeman (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College HS) scampered 20 yards with an interception return for a touchdown to lead the Golden Knights.

SCOUTING GANNON
  • Defending PSAC champion West Chester jumped out to the lead with 21 first-quarter points and was able to hold off the Golden Knights last week in Gannon's home opener.
  • Quarterback Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) and wide receiver Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) hooked up for a touchdown pass for the second consecutive game to start the season, as Keefe found Cox with a floater to the back of the end zone early in the second quarter.
  • For the second straight season, Gannon has to face an early-season gauntlet with back-to-back games against West Chester and Kutztown. Those two went a combined 19-1 in the regular season last year, and neither has finished lower than third in the East or 7-4 overall since 2015.
  • The Gannon roster features 50 true or redshirt freshmen, and not all are sitting back and waiting for an opportunity. Plenty fresh faces have seen time this year, including 21 freshmen and seven true sophomores last week against West Chester

SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
  • A somewhat defensive battle last week in a PSAC crossover contest at California opened up quickly in the fourth quarter. The Golden Bears netted two scores within 67 seconds early in the fourth quarter to go up 28-21, then went 60 yards in seven plays to score the game-winner with 15 seconds remaining.
  • Kutztown has been one of the more consistent winners in the East this decade, accounting for 71 wins from 2010 through this season, and posting a winning record in eight of the past nine years.
  • The Bears topped NE10 power Assumption by a 54-16 score in their season opener, and they're off to a 2-0 start for the second consecutive season. Last year, KU was 9-1 in the regular season and reached the NCAA playoffs for the third time.

UP NEXT
  • The Golden Knights kick off PSAC West play and celebrate homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Clarion.
  • The special 1 p.m. kickoff from McConnell Family Stadium will be held in conjunction with Gannon's Homecoming and Family Weekend. For more information and to register for the weekend's activities, go to GannonAlumni.org/Homecoming2019.
