Gannon Football Pushes Kutztown To End In PSAC Crossover Defeat

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Kutztown 48, Gannon 33
  • Records: Gannon (0-3, 0-0 PSAC West), Kutztown (3-0, 0-0 PSAC East)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: Getting touchdowns on a pass, a run and an interception return in the first 21 minutes of the game, Gannon opened up an early lead against Kutztown. Adding the first two scores of the second half, the Golden Knights stayed in front until the Golden Bears used a fourth-quarter surge to grab the victory in a PSAC crossover matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a Kutztown punt forced Gannon to start its first drive of the game at its own 1-yard line, the Golden Knights methodically ground out 99 yards over 13 plays, scoring the first points of the game on a 3-yard toss from Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) to Jacardi Brooks (Washington, D.C./Frederick Douglass) on fourth and goal.
  • A pair of short drives looked to be turning into three, but the Golden Bears connected on a long touchdown pass. Instead of allowing the guests to wrest the momentum away, Noah Harris-Lyles (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) blocked the ensuing extra point, which was scooped up by A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) and returned for two points to keep Gannon in front late in the first quarter.
  • Melvin Blanks (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who spelled Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) in the first half, made a highlight of his own on the next drive, bouncing 59 yards on the final play of the quarter to set the Golden Knights up inside the 10, and Zevin Holley (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) cashed in three plays later to make it 16-6 in favor of the hosts.
  • Malik Bridgeman (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College HS) kept the excitement coming, as the defensive lineman hauled in a tipped passed an rumbled 20 yards for another Gannon touchdown, making it a 23-6 lead with 9:03 still left in the second.
  • The Golden Bears netted two scores before the teams went into the break to get to within 23-22. Two long drives took up the first 10 minutes of the second half, with the Golden Knights the only ones getting points on a 25-yard field goal from Brian Strybel (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).
  • Rushes of 19, 10 and 20 yards from Jones on the next Gannon drive allowed the Knights to gobble up yardage. The final of those big runs saw the senior go untouched through a gaping hole for a touchdown that made it 33-22 on the first play of the fourth quarter.
  • The Golden Bears were able to find their offense in the final period though, taking the lead for the first time on a touchdown with 8:57 left to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Bridgeman's interception return is the first non-offensive touchdown of the season for the Golden Knights, and the first since Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) also returned a pick 20 yards for the score against Millersville in the final game of the 2017 season.
  • Bridgeman added two tackles for loss and a forced fumble to his disruptive day.
  • Blanks turned in a career-high 91 yards rushing in his first start.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon begins PSAC West play at Clarion Sept. 22, scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
  • That's the first of two straight road games to begin divisional play.
  • Gannon and Clarion each have two wins in the series in the last four meetings.
