Baseball’s Konar Smith Named PSAC Champion Scholar

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Gannon senior outfielder Konar Smith (Angus, Ontario/Nottawasaga Pine Secondary School) was tabbed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Baseball Champion Scholar, the league office announced Wednesday (May 8) afternoon prior to the Golden Knights tournament matchup with East Stroudsburg.

The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA's Elite 89 award and honor the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC's 23 team championship finals. The selection criteria for the Champion Scholar Awards is identical to that of the NCAA Elite 89 awards, which honor the student-athlete with the top GPA at each of the championship finals sites of the 89 NCAA championships across all three divisions – I, II, and III.

An athletic training major from Angus, Ontario, Smith boasts an impressive 3.99 grade point average after amassing 116 credits. Smith is a three-time PSAC Scholar entering his senior season.

Smith has been part of another tremendous season for the Gannon baseball program, helping the squad tie the program record for overall wins (31) for the second year in a row. He has played in three games, starting in two. He collected a pair of hits and scored a run in a crucial conference series against California (Pa.) (4/27/19).

In total, 12 different Gannon student-athletes have won the award 16 times. Gannon has had four athletes earn the Champion Scholar award multiple times, including earlier this fall when Lydia Lukomski repeated back in November.
