HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Offense was tough to come by to open the conference tournament, with both starting pitchers locking in early. Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) worked through a bases-loaded jam in the third inning to keep the game scoreless. The Gannon offense broke through in the bottom of the frame with one swing of the bat from Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), who cracked a homer out to center for a 1-0 lead.
  • Gannon tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, both solo home runs for a 3-0 advantage. Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) launched his 14th home run of the 2019 campaign to leadoff the frame before Mori lifted his second homer of the day just two batters later for the 3-0 edge.
  • Judy had to get out of another bases loaded situation after hitting a batter and walking two consecutive Warriors. The right-hander got a fly ball to end the frame and keep the Golden Knights in front.
  • East Stroudsburg made it a new ballgame in the sixth, pushing across three runs against reliever Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton). Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) came in to end the sixth with a strikeout. The Warriors eventually took the lead with a solo homer in the eighth.
  • Gannon battled in the ninth after Phelps tossed a scoreless frame before getting to work offensively. Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) punched a double down the left field line and scored on an Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) double. Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was intentionally walked and moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) drilled a 2-1 pitch to right, scoring Quiceno to seal the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon jumped to number two in the most recent NCAA DII Baseball Atlantic Region rankings. The full rankings can be found by clicking here.
  • With its 32nd win of the 2019 campaign, Gannon set a new program record for wins in a season.
  • The victory over East Stroudsburg was the first time the Golden Knights had won the opening game of the PSAC Tournament since joining the league.
  • Six different players recorded a hit for Gannon and four individuals had multiple hits in the contest.
  • On a warm day, Judy gutted out five innings on the mound and was able to work around several walks by only allowing one ESU hit. He fanned five, marking his eighth consecutive start with at least that many strikeouts. The hurler lowered his ERA to 2.34 and jumps into sole possession of second place on the program's single-season strikeout list (82).
  • Quiceno battled for his third hit of the contest in the ninth inning, maintaining his poise in a 10-pitch at-bat. It was the first three-hit game of the seasn for Quiceno, who leads the squad with 15 multi-hit efforts this year.
  • Mori entered the contest with one home run on the season, but smacked two home runs in the game for the seventh of his career.
  • Steighner is just the latest Golden Knight to come up large in a clutch situation, singling in the ninth for Gannon's fifth walk-off win of the season.
  • Phelps battled back from allowing the go-ahead homer in the eighth to sit down four of the final six ESU batters. He picked up the victory, pushing his record to 2-1 on the season.
  • Wednesday's opening round matchup marked the third straight conference tournament game against a PSAC East institution (Millersville, Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg).
