  • With a chance to earn the top seed in the PSAC West still in play, the Golden Knights continue their tough stretch to close the season against red-hot Mercyhurst, beginning on Friday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m. The Golden Knights will open the series on the road for a doubleheader before welcoming the Lakers to McConnell Family Stadium for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
  • Both squads boast an identical 18-6 mark in league play and have clinched a spot in the PSAC Baseball Tournament.
 
GANNON STORYLINES/NOTES
  • Gannon is a team powered by the home run, belting 53 long balls to lead the league and rank 26th in NCAA DII. With 13 home runs this season, senior outfielder Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) owns the single-season school record already, while Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) is second on the team and in second place on the single-season homer list with 10.
  • The Golden Knights are entering the final regular season series of the year following three wins against the California (Pa.) Vulcans last week.
  • The backstop duo of Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) lead the way offensively for the Golden Knights. Both players have collected over 40 hits this season while splitting time between the catcher and designated hitter spots.
  • Cardy is 16th in the league with a .350 batting average and has posted 12 multi-hit efforts this season. Meanwhile, Quiceno has proven to have a flair for the dramatic with two walk-off hits this season.
  • Starting pitching has been consistent throughout the year for the Golden Knights, with starters Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) logging over 40.0 innings each this season on the mound.
  • Judy is eighth in the league with 65 strikeouts and has earned a win in five of the last six outings.
  • John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson), Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ) and Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) are stalwarts out of the bullpen for the Golden Knights. Bender is first on the team with a 2.74 ERA.
  • Gannon leads the PSAC with a .504 slugging percentage and seven players have a slugging percentage of at least .540 through 40 games.
  • Entering the weekend, Beach, Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) and Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) have collected a hit in four consecutive contests.
  • Head coach Greg Coleman picked up his 100th career victory at the helm of the Golden Knights earlier this year. He enters the weekend with a 109-71 overall record.
 
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
  • Mercyhurst enters the final weekend of the regular season with a nine-game winning streak. The Lakers most recent sweep came against Clarion.
  • Matthew Minnick is just two strikeouts of 100 for the season. He leads the league and ranks 14th nationally with 98 punchouts in 2019.
  • Minnick has been stellar all season with a 1.50 ERA, the best in the conference and sixth best in NCAA DII.
  • Alex O'Donnell leads the team with a .356 batting average. Mercyhurst is a balanced offensive team, with five players in the lineup posting at least 20 RBI.
  • Mercyhurst leads the league in team ERA (3.72) behind one of the top pitching staffs in the PSAC.
  • Head coach Joe Spano has been at the helm of the Lakers for 20 seasons and has posted a 641-372-3 overall record.
 
UP NEXT
  • For the second consecutive season, Gannon will be making its second straight appearance in the PSAC Baseball Tournament.
  • The conference championship will take place on May 8-12 at Point Stadium in Johnstown.
