KEY SEQUENCE
  • NYIT got on the board early with a pair of sacrifice flies, but Gannon charged back with five runs in its next turn at the plate. Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) launched a grand slam to right, blowing the game open and lifting the Golden Knights to a 5-2 lead.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New York institute of Technology broke a scoreless tie, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the second.
  • Gannon answered in the next inning with a big five-run outburst. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) led off the inning by reaching on an error and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled to left in the next at-bat. Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) plated the Golden Knights first run with a sacrifice fly and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) was plunked to reach base. A single from Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) loaded the bases for Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who came up large with a clutch grand slam to right, blowing the game open as Gannon led 5-0.
  • The Golden Knights did the rest of their offensive damage in the fourth; plating the last two runs of the opening game. Quiceno hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) who reached via walk. In the next at-bat, Hess brought Callahan home with a double to left as Gannon surged ahead 7-2.
  • Alex Dobry (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) closed out the game with a scoreless outing, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

  • The Gannon pitching staff of Andrew Mottola (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) and John bender combined to toss a shutout while the Golden Knights offense did just enough to come away with a doubleheader sweep of NYIT on Thursday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mottola settled into a rhythm, pitching five scoreless innings with no runs and two walks.
  • Cardy doubled down the left field line to score Callahan, who was hit by a pitch to reach base, as Gannon took a 1-0 lead.
  • The Golden Knights plated the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, with a double by Hess scoring Cardy for a 2-0 edge.
  • John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) came on in relief, collecting the save with 2.0 innings of scoreless action. He struck out two and allowed just one hit to preserve the shutout.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon had seven players with a hit in the game.
  • Beach smacked his first homer of the year as Gannon continues to use the long ball to its advantage.
  • Dobry earned his first career victory in the outing.
  • Osceola Heritage Park is the former spring training home of the Houston Astros.
  • NYIT mustered just two hits in the first game while Gannon had seven knocks.
  • The Golden Knights picked up their second shutout of the season, with the first coming in game two against Wheeling Jesuit on March 4.
