KEY SEQUENCE
  • Notre Dame College jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in its first chance at the plate and the Golden Knights were trying to climb back from there. Despite Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) lacing a double to left to tie the game in the fourth, the Falcons put the game away for good with a four-run response in the home half of the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a quick 1-2-3 inning at the plate for Gannon, Notre Dame College raced ahead to a 2-0 lead after putting its first four batters on base. The 2-0 cushion was enough for Falcons pitcher Ty Shoaff, who allowed just two earned runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings.
  • Gannon got a run back in the top of the second after Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) and Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) reached on singles. Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) punched the third single of the frame through the left side, plating Quiceno and trimming the Gannon deficit to 2-1. The Golden Knights eventually loaded the bases with just one out in the inning, but had two straight flyouts to close the frame.
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) began to get into a grove on the mound, firing off two innings of scoreless baseball in the second and third. Gannon grabbed the equalizer in the top of the fourth, kick-started by a leadoff single from Mori. After Mori advanced to second on a wild pitch, Kalbfus delivered in the RISP situation with a double to left that tied the game at two.
  • The Falcons took control in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on a combination of Gannon errors and singles, to take a 6-2 lead.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 4, Notre Dame College 3
  • Records: Gannon (9-3) | Notre Dame (Ohio) (4-5)
  • Location: Lake Myrtle Field – Auburndale, Fla. (Russ-Matt Invitational)

KEY SEQUENCE
  • A tightly contested game two turned in Gannon's favor with one swing of the bat from Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), who rocketed a three-run homer in the sixth to put Gannon up 4-3. Coupled with a complete game effort from Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) on the mound, the Golden Knights were able to split Friday's doubleheader with Notre Dame College in Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A two-out triple from Nick Farrell lifted NDC ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Gannon tied the game at one in the home half of the first with a sacrifice fly from Cardy that brought home Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny), who singled through the left side to reach base.
  • After a pair of scoreless frames, the Falcons regained the lead with a two-run fourth inning.
  • The Golden Knights turned their fortunes in their second to last chance at the plate. With one out, Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached on an error and eventually moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A walk for Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) put two men on for Hamm, who delivered the go-ahead home run to push Gannon in front 4-3.
  • Morrison sealed the deal on the mound, allowing just one hit in the seventh inning before the game ended with a fielder's choice putout.

GAME NOTES
  • Mori, Quiceno and Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) all had multiple hits for Gannon in game one.
  • David Ariza (Bogota, Columbia/Colegio San Jose) tossed the final inning of scoreless relief for Gannon in the sixth. He did not allow a baserunner as the Falcons had one flyout and two groundouts.
  • Gannon committed a season-high five errors on the day in the first game. The Golden Knights had only had two errors throughout the other six games of the Russ-Matt Invitational.
  • Morrison worked through some traffic on the base-paths in his outing, but ultimately surrendered just three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He also fired in six strikeouts for his second victory in the 2019 campaign.
  • Cardy has collected a hit in six straight games.
  • Gannon is now 3-0 when Morrison starts on the mound this season.
  • The Golden Knights have hit 15 home runs in just 12 games. Gannon is 6-2 in games where they hit a home run.
  • Gannon is now 8-1 when scoring at least three runs this season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon wraps up its spring break trip down in Florida tomorrow morning with a nine inning contest against Wayne State at 9:30 AM.
