Lady Knights Split in Saint Francis Open on Saturday

  • The Short Story: The Lady Knights used a timely four-goal surge in third quarter, with Sydney  Fountain and Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) getting on the board with two goals each, to take a 6-2 lead in their opening game of the SFU Open Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) fired home the first two goals of the contest, which put the Lady Knights ahead 2-0. Mercyhurst answered with the next two goals, which tied the game, but Gannon responded with its bug four-goal swing in the third quarter.
  • Fountain and Fehr each scored twice as Gannon built its lead to 6-2.
  • Mercyhurst scored three of the final four goals of the game, but a Ruh tally at 4:05 in the fourth provided a key insurance marker for the Lady Knights, who were able to hold on for the 7-5 win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Five different players registered an assist in the victory, with Ruh, Fountain, Fehr, Julia Kredinger (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) and Lauren Rinderle (Erie, Pa./Fairview) are recording helpers.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) was stellar in goal with 16 saves for Gannon.
  • Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio /Napoleon) was strong on the defensive end, picking up two steals in a tightly contested matchup.
  • The Golden Knights were balanced as three players posted at least two goals.
  • Saturday's action was the first game for the Lady Knights since March 3.

  • The Short Story: Saint Francis scored the last two goals of the contest to escape with an 11-9 victory over the Lady Knights in the second game of the day for Gannon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Francis opened the game on a 4-1 run in the opening frame. Ruh put Gannon on the board at 6:03 in the first.
  • Following a strategic yellow card taken by head coach Shane Unger, Gannon roared back with the three of the next four goals. Fehr and Rinderle combined for the scoring surge as Gannon trailed just 5-4.
  • Fountain tied the contest with a strike at the 4:00 minute mark in the second and Fehr trimmed the Lady Knights deficit to one (7-6) at the intermission.
  • SFU opened the second half with the first two goals, but the Lady Knights limbed back into the game once again, eventually tying the game at 9-9 with a marker from Fehr at 1:55 in the third period.
  • Neither team could find much offensive footing in the final quarter, but the Red Flash posted two goals in the final frame for the 11-9 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon was even in its scoring distribution, posting three goals in the first, second and third quarters of the game against the Red Flash.
  • Vieira made 10 saves in game two, with four coming in the first quarter.
  • Fehr and Ruh posted multiple goals for Gannon.
  • The lady Knights outscored SFU 6-4 in the second and third quarter, but were outscored 7-3 in the first and fourth quarters.

  • Gannon returns to Erie next weekend, playing four games from March 30-31 in the Penn State Behrend Tournament.
  • The Lady Knights open the tournament against Washington & Jefferson (12:30 PM) and Villanova (8:00 PM) on March 30.
