Gannon Women’s Water Polo Opens Season With Strong Showings Against Harvard and Wagner Saturday

  • The Short Story: Gannon stayed right with 17th-ranked Harvard in the opening game of the 2019 season, but the Crimson took control in the second half en route to an 18-5 victory in the 2019 Bison Invitational hosted by Bucknell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Harvard cashed in on a pair of goals to open the morning matchup, Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) notched the first goal of the 2019 season for Gannon with a tally at 4:50.
  • Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) tied the game just over one minute later to knot the score at two.
  • Harvard fired back with the next three goals for a 5-2 edge before Gannon countered back in the second with a goal from Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio /Napoleon).
  • The Crimson took control from that point, reeling off the next four goals. Lauren Rinderle (Erie, Pa./Fairview) scored the last goal of the opening half for Gannon at 2:04 in the second period, bringing the Lady Knights to within five at 9-4.
  • From there, the undefeated Crimson scored eight straight goals to pull away. Ruh scored her second goal of the contest in the fourth quarter, capping Gannon's offensive output in the first game.

  • The Short Story: Wagner jumped out to an early lead and never looked back against Gannon in the second game of the day for the Lady Knights.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A no-look goal just crept past keeper Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) and put Wagner in front 4-0 as part of an early offensive onslaught.
  • The Seahawks held an 8-1 lead at intermission and continued pulling away in the second half.
  • Gannon scored once in each of the final three quarters, with two goals coming from Ruh and the third coming from Wiemken.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday was the first games for new head coach Shane Unger, who took over the reins of the Gannon program last November.
  • Wiemken recorded her first collegiate goal in her first game as a Lady Knight.
  • Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Maggie Fortin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) handed out assists in the second game against Wagner.
  • With a 23-3 win over Saint Francis earlier in the day, the potent Wagner offensive unit combined for 40 goals between the two games.
  • Four different players attempted at least two shots in the second game against Wagner.
  • Harvard is ranked 17th in the latest WWPA Poll.
