Three Lady Knights Post Double-Doubles to Help Lift Gannon Past Pitt-Johnstown, 3-0

  • The Short Story: Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) each recorded a double-double to lead the Lady Knights past the Mountain Cats, 3-0, on the road Saturday afternoon. Gannon also clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament for the 11th straight season.
 GAME DAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got things started taking its first lead of the day, 4-3, after Sampson connected on a kill. The Knights then settled in going on a 5-0 run highlighted by three Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) service aces to make the score 12-7. Gannon went on take to the opening set, 25-20.
  • The two teams traded points in the second set until the Knights built a four point, 14-10, advantage following a kill from Smith. Gannon continued to apply pressure stretching its lead to 10, 22-12, after back-to-back kills from Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran). The Knights won the second frame, 25-15.
  • Pitt-Johnstown pushed back in the third frame creating a 9-7 lead to force a Gannon timeout. The Knights answered later in the set to take a three point, 18-15, edge following a Smith kill. Gannon then went on to close out the set, 25-19.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon recorded its eighth straight and 16th sweep of the season.
  • The Knights eight straight sweeps is the longest streak since they strung together nine straight sweeps in the 2018 season.
  • Gannon clinched its 11th consecutive PSAC Tournament berth. The Knights have won the PSAC Tournament twice in program history. (2016, 2012).
  • Gannon held the edge in kills (45-40) and assists (44-40). Both teams recorded 68 digs each.
  • Smith registered her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 16 kills with 14 digs. She also added a .359 hitting percentage.
  • Sampson posted her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. She also tallied a match-high four service aces.
  • Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) also notched her seventh double-double of the season and distributed a match-high 39 assists with 11 digs.
  • Five Knights reached double digits in digs with Leitshuh setting the pace with a team-high 16.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues PSAC play on the road at Indiana (Pa.) (6-17, 5-9 PSAC) tomorrow. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
  • In their most recent meeting, Gannon rolled past Indiana (Pa.), 3-0. The Knights lead the all-time series, 37-10.
