KEY SEQUENCE
  • After building a strong first half lead, Gannon was able to stave off several runs from a potent Edinboro team. While the Fighting Scots worked to trim their second half deficit, Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Boston Mckinney combined for a 10-0 run that put the Lady Knights ahead by 20 with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter. It was part of an impressive night for the duo, who combined for 41 points

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) opened the evening with the first two baskets of the game, part of a quick 8-1 run to begin the contest for the Lady Knights. A three-pointer from Jontay Walton brought the Fighting Scots back to within two at 8-6. LaCava and McKinney countered back with the final two buckets of the opening quarter as Gannon led 12-6.
  • LaCava opened the second quarter with two foul shots and a basket to push the Gannon edge to 16-6. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) went on a mini-run of her own with a basket and three-pointer in a 30-second span to balloon the Gannon lead to 15 at 21-6.
  • McKinney knocked down a jumper with 4:47 remaining in the first half that pushed Gannon to its largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 19 points. H. Tewes gathered a missed shot and found the bucket, extending the Gannon lead to 31-12 with 1:58 left in the opening half.
  • After Edinboro wasn't able to take advantage of two turnovers early in the second half, the Knights made the hosts pay, as a pair of layups from Rourke pushed the lead out to 23 just over a minute and a half into the third quarter. LaCava's jumper at the 7:42 mark made it a 41-18 game.
  • The Scots were able to answer though, shooting out on a 13-1 run to slice that lead to 11 at 42-31 coming out of the third-quarter media timeout. Edinboro couldn't cut it to single digits, as buckets from LaCava and McKinney each pushed it back out to 13 on the next two possessions. Four free throws from LaCava and a McKinney 3-pointer off a Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) still suddenly had the guests back up by 20 at 53-33.
  • Edinboro managed to get it back to 58-45 on a Bridgette Shaffer triple two minutes into the fourth. Free throws out of Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) and another LaCava bucket pushed it back to 15 with three minutes to play, but a quick 8-2 burst from the Scots saw them cut the lead to less than 10 for the first time since early in the second quarter.
  • Obenrader and McKinney each hit a pair at the line after that run to bump it back to a 13-point lead for the Lady Knights, and after a missed 3-pointer for Edinboro with just under a minute to play, Gannon was able to bleed the clock and secure the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon had lost the last four meetings with the Fighting Scots and had not won inside the McComb Fieldhouse since the 2015-16 season.
  • McKinney poured in a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, marking her fifth double digit game of her career.
  • After registering the fourth double-double of her career at Seton Hill, LaCava poured in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half. She has notched double-digit scoring efforts in each of the past four games.
  • LaCava is the first player to score 20 or more points in two straight games since Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) accomplished the feat last season. She is also the first player with a double-double in two straight games since Lanise Saunders in 2016.
  • McKinney is the second freshman player to post 10 or more points in the last three games for Gannon after Obenrader had 15 points against Pitt-Johnstown on January 9.
  • The Lady Knights shot 45% or better as a team for the fourth straight game and fifth time in the past seven outings.
  • Edinboro was limited to 31.1% from the floor, tying a season-low for the Fighting Scots.
  • Gannon out-rebounded the Fighting Scots 45-28. The 45 rebounds are the most in a game for the Lady Knights since Mansfield on December 2, 2018.
  • Six players played at least 20 minutes for Gannon, which led for 39:25 of the game.
  • The win over Edinboro pushed Gannon to its second straight road win against a team with 10 or more wins this season following a victory over Seton Hill last Saturday.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home on Saturday, January 19 to face Clarion for the Pink Zone Doubleheader at the Hammermill Center.
  • Live video, live stats and live audio will be available for the 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
