Gannon Baseball Bolsters Postseason Case with 14-1 Victory over Lake Erie Storm

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Gannon 14, at Lake Erie 1

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Baseball team rolled to a 14-1 victory over the Lake Erie Storm on Wednesday, played at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon and Lake Erie each had quiet bats through the first two innings, trading zeroes. Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) got the start for the Golden Knights and tossed a scoreless first inning.
  • GU dented the scoreboard first, tallying a run in the third inning. Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) got on base and worked his way over to third before Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) produced an RBI-groundout. Gannon led 1-0.
  • The Golden Knights added their second run in top of the third inning on another RBI-groundout by Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area).
  • Lake Erie got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Wes Birchmeier cleared the fence for a solo-shot. Gannon still led, 2-1.
  • The game remained 2-1 until the sixth inning. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) led off the inning by reaching on an error. Oruch followed with a walk and Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) loaded the bases with an infield single.
  • Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) drove the first run of the inning in as he drew a bases loaded walk. The line kept moving as Gannon sent 12 to the plate in the inning and headed to the bottom of the sixth with a 10-1 lead.
  • Mori belted his fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning, kicking the Golden Knights lead out to 12 runs,13-1.
  • The game was called after the seventh as the teams agreed to a 10-run rule after seven innings of play.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) picked up his sixth pitching victory of the season, throwing three innings of relief. Morrison struck out two and gave up just one run.
  • Mori went 2-for-5 in the game, clubbing a home run, scoring twice and driving in five RBIs.
  • Callaway led the Golden Knights with three hits and scored a run.
  • M. Colosi and Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) also tallied a pair of hits for Gannon.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • GU was ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rankings. The top seven teams at season's end advance to the NCAA tournament.
  • Gannon and Erie played at McConnell Family Stadium last Thursday and the Golden Knights shutout the Storm, 18-0.
  • The Golden Knights registered their 10th double-digit scoring performance of the season. The 14 runs are the fifth-most single-game runs this season.
  • Lake Erie scored a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) single-game record 31 runs in a 31-6 victory over the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons (23-22) on Tuesday in game one of their doubleheader.

  • Gannon returns to action Friday, May 5, at Slippery Rock to begin the final Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PSAC) series of the season.
