Gannon Softball Clinches PSAC West Division With Split Against Slippery Rock

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: at Slippery Rock 14, Gannon 13 (8 Innings)

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team clinched the regular season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Title for the second straight year on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Slippery Rock. 
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) in the first inning to give the Lady Knights an early lead.
  • Slippery Rock's Lauren Hawley hit a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to give the hosts a brief 2-1 lead.
  • Ingerick tied it up in the second inning when she drove home Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) with a double to right center, her seventh of the year. Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) put Gannon up with a two-run double to right field, scoring Ingerick. Kr. DeMatteis extended Gannon's lead to 5-2 with an RBI single to shortstop.
  • Slippery Rock got one run back in the bottom half of the inning when Alexa Guglielmino scored Caitlyn MacKelvey from third base on an infield ground-out.
  • Gannon plated a pair of unearned runs in the third, one on a fielding error and one on a wild pitch, to extend its lead to 7-3.
  • In the fourth inning, Kr. DeMatteis hit her second home run in three games with a two-run bomb to left field to give Gannon a 9-3 advantage.
  • Slippery Rock's Cortney Claypoole crushed a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the inning to cut her team's deficit to 9-7. The homer was the first of Claypoole's career. The Rock scores two more runs in the fourth, followed by four more in the fifth to take a 13-9 lead.
  • Kr. DeMatteis kicked off the sixth inning with her second homer of the game. Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) drove home Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) with a single up the middle to cut it to 13-11.
  • Szajn tied it up at 13-13 in the seventh with a double down the left field line, her fifth of the season.
  • SRU's Becca Roesch scored Julia Cepis on a walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the eighth to give the hosts a victory in extra innings.  
 
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Kr. DeMatteis finished the game with three hits, including two homers, to go with a team-high five RBI.
  • Ingerick had a game-high four hits.
  • Tanilli and Szajn had two RBI apiece.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 18-17.
  • Slippery Rock committed three errors to Gannon's two.
  • Five Lady Knights had multi-hit games.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took the loss in 4.2 innings. She had five strikeouts, while giving up 10 hits and 10 runs (9 unearned).
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering four runs (2 unearned).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Ingerick kicked off game two with a one-out solo home run to left field, her fifth of the season. Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) scored an unearned run on a fielding error to make it 2-0.
  • The Rock tied it up in the bottom of the first when Kailey Myers smacked a two-run homer.
  • Martinez scored the go-ahead run in the second inning when she drove home Smith with a single through the left side. Ingerick scored Kirsten Terry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) on her second double of the day and Stocker followed by scoring Ingerick and Martinez on a double to left center to give Gannon a 6-2 lead.
  • The Lady Knights extended their lead to 8-2 in the third inning when Szajn scored on a wild pitch and Smith scored on a fielding error.
  • In the sixth inning, Ingerick belted her second homer of the game. Gannon stretched the lead to 10-2 when Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored on a wild pitch.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Ingerick led Gannon with three hits, including two homers, and a team-high three RBI.
  • Martinez and Stocker had multi-hit games.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 10-6.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win in the circle. She had five strikeouts while scattering four six hits and two runs.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon clinched the regular season PSAC Western Division Title for the second straight year with the victory on Saturday. The Lady Knights finished with a 15-5 conference record.
  • The Lady Knights clinched the West Division's top seed in the PSAC Tournament next week in Quakertown, Pa.
  • Gannon will be making its eighth-straight trip to the PSAC Tournament.
  • Gannon is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings. Slippery Rock is ranked eighth in the region.
  • Game one was Gannon's first extra-inning game of the season.
  • Gannon gave up a season-high 14 runs in the opener.
  • GU ranks second in the PSAC with 33 homers.
  • The Lady Knights have recorded at least two home runs in each of the last three games and at least one homer in the last six games.
  • Kr. DeMatteis hit two home runs in the opener, while Ingerick had two homers in game two.
  • Tanilli is on a nine-game hit streak.
  • Martinez has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games.
