Gannon Softball Team Withstands Late Bloomsburg Rally; Wins 4-3 in PSAC Tournament Opener

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team endured a late Bloomsburg rally and held on to win 4-3 in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament in Quakertown, Pa. The Lady Knights now advance to play West Chester Thursday, April 3 at 3 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Knights got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) drove home Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) on her sixth double of the season.
  • The Huskies scored the tying run in the top of the third on a Gannon throwing error.
  • In the fifth inning, Martinez scored Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) on a sacrifice fly to left field to put Gannon up 2-1. Stocker sent home Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) with an RBI single to right field. Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area), the reigning PSAC West Player of Week, gave the Lady Knights a 4-1 lead when she scored from second base on a Bloomsburg error.
  • Bloomsburg's Maggie Hall and Kalynn Wheeland recorded individual RBI to get two runs back for the Huskies in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Marissa Shelhamer grounded out to Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) at third base to halt Bloomsburg's rally and end the game.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Martinez and Stocker had two hits apiece.
  • Stocker had a team-high two RBI, while Martinez had one.
  • Gannon and Bloomsburg recorded eight hits each.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) improved to 12-5 in the circle in her 13th complete game of the season. She had four strikeouts and scattered eight hits in the win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked fourth in the recent NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • Eight PSAC teams are ranked in the region's top-10.
  • The Lady Knights clinched their second straight regular season PSAC Western Division title.
  • Gannon is making its eighth-consecutive trip to the PSAC tournament.
  • Martinez extended her on-base streak to 19 games and her hit streak to eight games.
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) had her fifth stolen base of the season.
  • Wednesday was Stocker's 12th multiple-RBI game of the season.
