Gannon Softball Team Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep of Seton Hill (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Gannon 7, Seton Hill 2
  • Game Two Score: Gannon 8, Seton Hill 4

  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium – Erie, Pa.
  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team recorded 21 hits in two games and swept Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action for the second time this season on Sunday afternoon. Gannon rolled to a 7-2 win in game one before taking game two, 8-4. With the wins, Gannon improved to 22-11 overall and 12-4 in the PSAC.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) put Gannon up two-runs in the first inning with a two-run single to deep left center, scoring Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes).  
  • Seton Hill got one run back in the top of the second on Ashley Perillo's solo shot to right center, her third homer of the season.
  • Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) gave Gannon a 3-1 lead in the second inning on a home run down the left field line, her fourth homer of the spring. Martinez scored Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) from second base with an RBI single up the middle.
  • Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) put the Lady Knights up 7-1 in the fourth on a deep three-run bomb to right center, her second homer in two days.  
  • The Griffins scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh, on a solo home run to center field by Christiana Skrabak, her third homer of the year.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Martinez was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Stocker hit her eighth homer of the season to lead Gannon with three RBI.
  • Tanilli recorded two RBI, while Szajn had one on her solo home run.
  • Wilp had two hits and two runs in her second straight multi-hit game.
  • Gannon out-hit Seton Hill, 10-4.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched her 10th win of the season in her 11th complete game. She struck out four and scattered four hits.
  • Beining has not walked a batter in seven of her last eight appearances.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Seton Hill got out to a one-run lead in the top of the first when Skrabak scored Brooke Bower on a sacrifice fly out to right field.
  • Taliani tied it up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to left center, scoring Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) from second base.
  • Martinez kicked off a six-run second inning with an RBI ground-out, scoring Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). Ingerick kept it rolling when she drove home Szajn with a base-hit to right field. Stocker scored Ingerick with an RBI double to left field to make it 4-1. Taliani crushed a two-run bomb to left center, her fifth homer of the season.
  • The Lady Knights extended their lead to 7-1 in the third when Ingerick scored Martinez with a single up the middle.
  • Seton Hill scored an unearned run in the fourth on an error.
  • On the first pitch of the sixth inning, Devyn Terry smacked her third home run of the year to make it 8-3. Seton Hill scored one more run in the sixth on a throwing error.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Ingerick, Stocker and Taliani all had two-hit games.
  • Taliani led Gannon with three RBI, while Ingerick had two RBI and two runs.
  • Gannon out-hit Seton Hill, 11-8.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) earned her eighth win in the circle. She made two strikeouts.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon earned its sixth doubleheader sweep of the season.
  • Taliani recorded two stolen bases in two games.
  • Martinez has reached base safely in 14 consecutive games, while Tanilli has reached base in 10 straight games.
  • Gannon's 23 home runs ranks third in the PSAC, while 179 RBI also ranks third. 
  • Stocker's eight home runs ranks third among PSAC players.
  • Gannon's ERA of 1.90 ranks first in the conference.
