Gannon Baseball Sweeps California (Pa.) in Key PSAC-West Division Doubleheader

  • Location: Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: Gannon Baseball swept the California (Pa.) Vulcans on Friday, April 20, at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights took game one, 12-3, followed by a 5-0 blanking.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Gannon put the first run of the game on the board in the second inning. With Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) aboard, Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) lined a ball to right field, plating Mori. Gannon went up, 1-0.
  • The Golden Knights took a 3-0 lead after Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) launched a two-run homer to left field in the third inning. Cardy's home run also scored Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) on the play.
  • Gannon added another run in the inning to go up, 4-0.
  • The Golden Knights continued to add to its lead in the fourth inning. M. Colosi and Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) singled before Cardy lashed a triple to center field, clearing the bases.
  • Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) came to the plate and hit a ball to right field that was misplayed. Cardy scored on the Vulcan miscue to put Gannon up, 7-0.
  • The Vulcans finally got on the board in the top of the fifth as Bill Hitman hit a lead-off homer to left-center field. Gannon continued to lead, 7-1.
  • The Golden Knights put the exclamation point on the game in the sixth inning. Already leading 7-3, Gannon scored five times in the inning, capped off by an Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) three-run homer.
  • Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) pitched the final inning in 1-2-3 fashion as Gannon took the game, 12-3.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Cardy went 4-for-4 in the game, falling just a double short of the cycle. He scored three runs and drove in five from the three-spot in the lineup. It was Cardy's third home run and triple of the season.
  • Steighner also clubbed his third home run of the season.
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) was the winning pitcher, tossing 5 2/3 innings of six-hit, three-run baseball. He also struck out five while walking just four.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon was ranked ninth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional rankings.
  • The Golden Knights have scored nine runs or more in six of their last nine games.
  • Gannon is the only team in the conference to not have given up a triple so far this season.
  • The Golden Knights' remaining schedule has a .613 winning percentage, the 19th –toughest in NCAA Division II. Opponents are a combined 287-181.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Game two began with a Benack single and a Cox two-run blast to left center. Gannon led 2-0 after one full inning.
  • The Golden Knights added a run in the bottom of the third inning. Gannon strung together a pair of hits in the form of a Cardy single and Cox double drove him in.
  • The score remained 3-0 until the fifth inning. Gannon had runners stationed at every base when Nicolia ripped a single to right, scoring Steighner and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge). Gannon took a five-run lead to the sixth. 
  • David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) was having his way with the Vulcan hitters. Cricks had only allowed three hits through the first five innings. 
  • The only Vulcan threat to the Golden Knight shutout came in the seventh inning. A lead-off single by Bobby Thompson and another by Danny McGrath had runners at the corners with two outs, but Cricks forced an Austin Logan fly out to end the game. 
  • Gannon took game two, 5-0, to complete the sweep.

GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Cricks pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits, two walks and struck out seven batters.
  • Cox hit his fourth home run of the season, going 2-for-4 in the game and driving in three RBIs.
  • Steighner and Cox both had doubles in the game for Gannon.
  • The golden Knights outhit California (Pa.), 11-5.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon shutout its fourth opponent of the season, the first since a 5-0 blanking of Seton Hill on Mar. 30.
  • Cricks pitched the eighth complete game and first complete-game shutout of his career.

  • Gannon will be back in action Saturday, April 21, for the final two games of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against California (Pa.).
