Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Opens Season with Dominating 21-6 Victory in Florida

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the match during a dominating 15-2 first half and posted a 21-6 victory Thursday night in its season opener at Palm Beach Atlantic. Senior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) became the 17th Lady Knight in program history to record 200 career points with a four-goal, four-assist night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon wasted little time kick starting the season, netting the first four goals during the opening five minutes and 14 seconds. Junior Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scored the first goal 95 seconds into the contest. King than sandwiched freshman Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville)'s first career goal between two of her own.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic found the back of the net for its first tally at the 21:52 mark, but Gannon responded with six more scores. Six different Lady Knights scored during the run.
  • After the Sailfish scored their second goal, the Lady Knights kept their foot on the pedal and ripped off another five goals to assume a commanding 15-2 lead at the intermission.
  • Freshman Jayme Kostial (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) produced her first two career goals during the final run. King's third goal of the half capped the dominating first stanza with 12 seconds left.
  • The second half was played on more even terms. Palm Beach Atlantic tried to get back into the contest with three straight goals out of the break.
  • Gannon countered with six of the final seven scores, including the last four. Kostial was responsible for the last three goals during the final three minutes and 19 seconds. Her fifth tally of the evening with two seconds left accounted for the final 21-6 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon generated advantages in shots (30-13), draw controls (19-8), ground balls (12-7), fewest turnovers (13-17) and caused turnovers (4-3).
  • King headlined the Gannon scoring attack with four goals, four assists, eight points and eight draw controls.
  • Kostial finished with a team-high five goals on six shots during her collegiate debut.
  • Sophomore Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) recorded her second career hat trick in addition to winning two draw controls.
  • Bower, junior Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) and freshman Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville) produced multiple-goal performances.
  • Junior Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), junior Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) and sophomore Brianna Murosky (Erie, Pa./McDowell) completed the scoring with one score each. Murosky's score was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Capozzo led Gannon's transition game with a career-high six ground balls and four draw controls.
  • Junior Caroline Mauck (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) dished out her first three career assists.
  • Freshman Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded three saves while earning her first career win during her collegiate debut between the pipes.

  • Thursday's contest represented Gannon's season opener.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic was playing its fifth match of the season.
  • Gannon and Palm Beach Atlantic met on the lacrosse field for the first time ever.
