Gannon Women's Basketball Bows Out of PSAC Tournament With Loss at Seton Hill

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights fell in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, 78-65, to Seton Hill on Monday night. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) led the Lady Knights with a season-high 30 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill edged out to a 10-3 advantage early on thanks to a pair of Jenna Kaufman buckets.
  • Gannon followed with seven consecutive points, capped off by a Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) three-pointer to tie the game at 10.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth with the score tied at 12, 14 and 16 points, before Seton Hill pulled ahead with a bucket before the quarter expired. Seton Hill led, 19-16.
  • Seton Hill began the second quarter with the first five points, extending its lead to 24-16.
  • Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) knocked down a bucket at the 7:07 mark to carry the moment back over to the side of the Lady Knights.
  • Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) hit a layup at the 3:48 mark to complete a 9-0 run and give Gannon a 27-24 lead.
  • Seton Hill retook the lead by halftime, 33-29.
  • The Lady Knights hung tough to begin the third quarter, keeping pace with Seton Hill. M. Mitchell hit a layup at the 4:06 mark to keep Gannon down just four, 42-38.
  • Seton Hill's lead hit double digits for the first time, 52-42, with the first basket in the fourth quarter.
  • Elise Torrence (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) made a trip to the line at the 6:47 mark of the fourth quarter, pulling Gannon back to within eight, 54-46.
  • M. Mitchell kept the Lady Knights alive late, hitting a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven, 66-59, with 1:53 remaning.
  • Gannon couldn't pull off the comeback, though. Seton Hill sank its free throws late and won, 78-65.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon's shot 43.5 percent from the field, making 20 of 46 shots. Seton Hill shot 39.1 percent, hitting 25 of 64 shots.
  • M. Mitchell led the Lady Knights with a season-high 30 points on 10-of-20 shooting. She also had two rebounds and a steal.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) also touched double-digits in the scoring column with 12 points on four-of-nine shooting.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) notched her fourth double-figure rebounding game of the season with 11 in the game.
  • Kaufman led Seton Hill with 24 points and nine rebounds.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon reached its 19th postseason in the last 21 seasons.
  • The Lady Knights own a 10-4 record all-time in the series.  It was the first Seton Hill victory over Gannon in the postseason.
  • Gannon fell to just 14-2 when scoring at least 60 points a game.
  • M. Mitchell finished her career with 1,143 career points and 968 in a Lady Knight uniform after transferring with 175 points from NCAA Division II school, Ashland.
