THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 73, Clarion 50

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights rolled over the Clarion Golden Eagles, 73-50, on Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) led the Lady Knights with 22 points and six rebounds.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon and Clarion traded baskets in the opening minutes as the teams were tied at three and again at eight.
  • The Lady Knights finished the last six minutes of the half on a 12-2 run, taking a 20-10 lead to the second quarter. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) each registered five points in the quarter.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) opened the second period with a bucket as Gannon continued its run. The Lady Knights opened the second quarter with 11 straight points, extending its lead to 31-10.
  • The Golden Eagles responded with a 10-3 run of their own, inching back to within 34-20 at the 3:23 mark of the quarter. 
  • Gannon went to the break with a 39-20 advantage. M. Mitchell led the Lady Knights with 10 points.
  • The Lady Knights lead ballooned to 25 points, 51-26, at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter with another LaCava bucket.
  • A Taylor Moltz three-pointer and Tynita White layup closed the gap back to 55-39 as the fourth quarter neared for Clarion.
  • Clarion came as close as 15 points, 62-47, before a Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) triple and L. Tewes layup pushed the lead back to 20, 67-47, with 3:38 remaining.
  • Gannon closed out the game with a Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) three-pointer, winning, 73-50.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 52.9 percent from the field, making 27 of 51 shots.
  • M. Mitchell led the Lady Knights with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She also collected six assists.
  • LaCava also touched double-digits in the scoring column with 16 points on six-of-eight shooting.
  • Gannon registered a season-high 22 assists in the contest.
  • The Lady Knights also tied a season-high with 12 three-pointers made.
  • White led Clarion with 14 points while adding five rebounds.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon clinched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament berth last Saturday with a 75-59 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers.
  • The Lady Knights will have the No. 5 seed in the PSAC tournament and will play at the No. 4-seed, Seton Hill, on Monday, Feb. 26. The time is still to be determined.
  • The Lady Knights improved to 15-2 when leading at halftime and 14-1 when scoring at least 60 points in the game.
  • Braungart recorded a career-high seven rebounds in the game.
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes the regular season Saturday, February 24 against Slippery Rock at the Hammermill Center.
  • The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • It will be Senior Day as Gannon Women's Basketball honors Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark), Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) and Kelsey Dugger during pregame festivities.
