Gannon Women’s Water Polo Drops Two Contests in Season Opener at Bucknell Bison Invitational

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Final Score: Bucknell 17, Gannon 9

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team opened the 2018 season on Saturday morning with a 17-9 loss to Bucknell at the Bison Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) put the Golden Knights up 1-0 in the first period, but the Bison responded with back-to-back goals. Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) tied it up 2-2 with 0:35 remaining in the first period.
  • Bucknell opened the second period with four consecutive goals, stretching its lead to 6-2. Barr scored on a pass from Ruh, but Bucknell scored two more goals to close the first half up, 8-3.
  • Kristi Howe (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Ruh scored goals for Gannon in the third period, but Bucknell scored four more goals and led 12-6 after three periods of action.
  • The Bison scored two straight goals to start the fourth period. Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored on an assist from Fountain to make it 14-7. Bucknell scored another pair of goals before Fountain scored her second goal of the game.
  • Bucknell scored one more goal with 3:15 remaining before Ruh tallied her third goal of the game with 0:22 ticks left in the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Ruh finished with three goals, three assists and three steals in the loss.
  • Fountain and Barr recorded two goals apiece.
  • Goalkeeper Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made six saves for the Lady Knights.
  • The Lady Knights were picked to finish seventh in the 2018 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Preseason Coaches Poll.

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights suffered a 16-10 loss to George Washington Saturday evening at Bucknell University's Bison Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cooney put the Lady Knights on the scoreboard first when she scored on a pass from Ruh just 47 seconds into the contest.
  • George Washington tied it up 14 seconds later. Gannon and GW exchanged goals and closedoff the first period tied up, 2-2.  
  • The Colonials went up 3-2 in the second period, but Barr scored on a pass from Grace Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) to tie it up once again. George Washington scored back-to-back goals before Ruh scored her second goal of the contest.
  • GW closed off the first half with two consecutive goals to take a 7-4 halftime lead.
  • The Lady Knights outscored the Colonials 5-4 in the third period, led by Barr's two scores. George Washington led 12-7 after three periods of action.
  • The Colonials outscored Gannon 5-1 in the final period to win it, 16-10.

GAME NOTES
  • Barr finished the game with four goals and one assist for Gannon.
  • Ruh added three goals and four assists.
  • Vieira made 10 saves in goal for the Lady Knights.
  • The Lady Knights were picked to finish seventh in the 2018 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Cooney's three goals Saturday brought her career total to 143 goals, which ranks seventh all-time at Gannon.  
  • Barr recorded six goals between the two games, which moves her to 14th in Gannon history with 86 career goals.

  • The Lady Knights continue action at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 11 against Saint Francis (Pa.) at 9:30 a.m. Gannon will conclude the invite with a match against Wagner at 2:30 p.m.
