Gannon Men’s Water Polo Upends Mercyhurst for Third Place at MAWPC-West Region Championship to End 2018 Season

  • The Short Story: Top-seeded Gannon had its 2018 season come to an end on Sunday morning after rolling past Mercyhurst by a final margin of 14-4. The Golden Knights rebounded in a big way to collect a third-place finish in the 2018 MAWPC-West Region Championship after falling in their first game of the tournament yesterday afternoon against McKendree.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon trailed 2-1 following the first quarter of action and eventually took control of the game with the next seven goals for an 8-2 lead. Tomas Squeglia scored three of Gannon's seven goals while Riley Hinkley (Meshoppen, Pa./Princeton) scored a pair of goals in the scoring run. Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) also found the net in the Gannon outburst, which spanned from 6:37 in the second quarter to 2:13 in the third quarter.
  • The Golden Knights went on to outscore the Lakers 6-2 to end the game and earn the convincing 14-4 victory. Jake Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) scored three of the final six goals for the Golden Knights.
 
GAME NOTES
  • After trailing 2-1 to begin the game, Gannon outscored Mercyhurst 13-2 the rest of the way.
  • The Lakers held a 37-36 edge in shots.
  • Brett Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) swatted down 18 Mercyhurst shot attempts. He also notched two steals and handed out two assists. Nate Winkler (Southlake, Texas/Carroll Independent School District) also saw time in goal for Gannon.
  • Four players found the net multiple times for Gannon in the game. Th. Squeglia led the team with four goals, J. Rehrer added three, while Tim Baer (San Diego, Calif./Classical Academy) and Hinkley each chipped in two goals apiece.
  • Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) recorded a game-high three assists.
  • Gannon was effective with the man-advantage, going 5-for-12 on powerplay chances.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE                                       
  • Mercyhurst's four goals are the fewest the Golden Knights have allowed in a game this season.
  • The Golden Knights swept the season series against the Lakers with wins in all three meetings. In addition to this morning, Gannon also defeated Mercyhurst on October 14 (11-6) and October 27 (20-6).
  • McKendree and Salem will play for the MAWPC-West Region Championship later today.
