  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium — Erie, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a bit of a slow start that featured three punts and a missed field goal on the first four combined drives of the game, Gannon quickly found its footing late in the first quarter. After a punt return from Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) that gave the Golden Knights a starting spot in Seton Hill territory, Jones burst 43 yards for the opening score of the game.
  • The Gannon defense — which also found its groove after allowing some yardage on the Griffins' first drive of the game — broke through for a big play of its own, as A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) picked off a jump ball on the final play of the first quarter, setting up the Knights at the SHU 47 to start the second period.
  • It didn't take long for Gannon to cover that yardage with three runs, capped by Jones powering home from 12 yards out with the help of a surge from his offensive line to make it 13-0. The Griffins were able to move the ball through the air two drives later though, cutting it back to one possession at 13-7 with 3:48 left in the opening half.
  • Quarterback Jason Dambach (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) moved to an air attack on the ensuing possession, hitting Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa./Reading) for 29 yards into Griffin territory before finding Jordan Smith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) down the seam for the 27-yard score just over two minutes after Seton Hill found the scoreboard to bump it back out to two possessions before the intermission.
  • Seton Hill started moving the ball after receiving the second-half kickoff, working it down to the Gannon 10 and looking to cut the lead back to one possession, but Martell Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Licking Heights) stepped in front of a pass to the end zone and scampered untouched 100 yards the other way for the touchdown to suddenly make it 27-7, and the hosts would lead by double digits the rest of the way.
  • It didn't take long for the Golden Knights to add to their lead, as James Simms (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) ripped the ball away after a Seton Hill reception four plays later, with Dorian Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) hopping on the fumble. Jones burst through a big hole on the second play of Gannon's response, going 47 yards for his third touchdown to give the Knights a 34-7 advantage with 10:47 on the clock in the third quarter.
  • Seton Hill found the end zone for the second time in the game on the next drive, but after four straight stops by the two defenses, Gannon ended a quarter with a big play for the second time on the day. With the defense keying on Jones, Dambach pulled the ball on a zone read and slipped around the right side, hitting the afterburners to beat two defenders and roll 70 yards for the score.
  • Jones wasn't done with his highlight reel in the fourth, as he took an iso behind the right guard, made one move and found the edge, going 58 yards for his fourth touchdown with 9:51 remaining in the game to make it 48-21. The senior broke the career mark with his final carry, a run for eight yards to the SHU 7 with less than three minutes to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Jones ended the day with 3,343 career rushing yards, pushing him past the Golden Knights' Sterling Pierce, who accumulated 3,334 yards during the 1996-99 seasons.
  • The 264 yards for Jones is his 14th career 100-yard rushing game and his fifth career 200-yard effort. He's run for at least 100 yards in 14 of his last 19 games.
  • The Knights rushed for 359 yards on 48 carries, the team's biggest output since running for 567 last year against the Griffins.
  • Dambach finished an efficient 9-for-16 through the air for 102 yards and a score, and added 77 yards on the ground.
  • Davis posted his second straight impactful game from his safety spot, recording 10 tackles — including 2.5 for a loss — and a fumble recovery to go with his 100-yard interception return.
  • Simms recorded a season-high 12 tackles to lead the Knights in addition to his forced fumble.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon begins a tough closing stretch with a road game at California (Pa.) Saturday.
  • The game is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Cal's Adamson Stadium.
  • The Vulcans earned a 41-27 win Saturday afternoon against fellow PSAC West unbeaten Clarion.
  • Cal leads the all-time series against the Golden Knights 9-1.
