Another Huge Day For Jones Leads Gannon Football To Big Win Over California (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 29, California (Pa.) 15
  • Records: Gannon (2-5, 2-2 PSAC West), California (4-3, 3-1 PSAC West)
  • Location: Adamson Stadium — California, Pa.
  • The Short Story: A spark a week ago turned into a fire Saturday, as Gannon earned its first-ever on-field victory against California (Pa.) behind 276 rushing yards from Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) and a bruising effort from the Golden Knight defense.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 12 minutes of the game was eaten up by sustained drives by each team. The Vulcans got on the board first with a 59-yard drive, but the Golden Knights got things started with a 22-yard kickoff return by A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius).
  • A third-down conversion on a pass from Jason Dambach (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) to Richard Makowski (Kolkwitz, Germany/Lausitzer Sportschule) kept the drive alive. Jones picked up a must-have yard on a fourth down, and capped the drive with an 11-yard run with 3:29 left in the quarter, but Cal blocked the extra point to keep a 7-6 lead.
  • The two sides traded punts on the next two drives, but with the hosts driving the ball into Gannon territory early in the second quarter, Martell Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Licking Heights) stepped up with a big play for yet another game. The safety intercepted a third-down pass and returned it 21 yards to flip the field.
  • Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) started the possession with runs of 15 and 31 yards to get into the red zone, but a penalty led to a long field goal attempt that fell short and kept Cal in front by just a point at the midway point of the quarter.
  • Two more runs of double-digit yards on the Knight's next drive pushed the ball to the Vulcan 7, and Brian Strybel (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) converted a 25-yard field goal with 22 seconds left before halftime to give Gannon its first lead at 9-7.
  • Another huge play by the Golden Knight defense cut a Cal scoring opportunity short, as Romell Jones (Woodbridge, Va./Brentsville District) got his hand on the ball on a Vulcan run inside the Gannon 5-yard line to pop it loose, and Reginald Hamlette Jr. (Temple Hills, Md./Oxon Hill) hopped on it for the turnover.
  • A long field, with the drive starting at the Gannon 2, got shorter in a hurry, as Dambach did a great job avoiding a rush and found Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa./Reading) for a 94-yard touchdown down the left sideline for a 15-7 lead.
  • Cal picked up a couple chunk plays to move down the field and was able to tie things up with a score and two-point conversion, but it was all Gannon from there. A 10-play, 73-yard drive on its next possession was capped by an 8-yard score by Jones, and gave the Knights the lead for good at 22-15 with 2:57 left in the third.
  • The Gannon defense allowed just four total yards and two three-and-outs on the next two Cal drives, and the Dambach-Owens connection hooked up again, this time on a fade to the left side for 19 yards to make it 29-15 with less than four minutes to play.
  • A pair of screen passes got the Vulcans into Gannon territory, but the Golden Knights battened down the hatches and forced an incompletion on fourth down to secure the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • It is the first on-field victory for Gannon in the all-time series against Cal. The official record is a 9-2 lead for the Vulcans, who forfeited the 2014 contest before gameday.
  • Jones followed up his big day last week with an even bigger day against Cal, going for 276 rushing yards on 38 carries, his second straight game with at least 260 yards on the ground.
  • The 94-yard strike from Dambach to Owens in the third quarter broke the Gannon record for longest pass play. The previous mark was Liam Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic Local) to Abraham Ocasio for 89 yards against Lake Erie in 2012.
  • After Cal's opening drive, the Gannon defense allowed just 260 yards of offense on 52 plays the rest of the way. The 15 points for the Vulcans was their lowest since a 26-10 loss to Indiana (Pa.) last year.
  • Gannon handed the Vulcans their first division loss at home since the 2013 season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon begins a stretch of three of its final four games at home next week, welcoming No. 23 Indiana (Pa.) to McConnell Family Stadium Saturday.
  • A noon kickoff, the game is also American Law Enforcement/Military Appreciation Day, and a Jimmy John's Promotional Day.
  • Live video, live stats and live audio will be available.
  • IUP, which started 4-0 and reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls, snapped a two-game skid by coming back against Clarion Saturday, scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 24-23 win.
  • The Crimson Hawks hold a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series, and have won three straight since Gannon's 31-21 victory during its 9-2 season in 2014.
