Weekend Recap: Gannon Men’s Water Polo Remains Perfect with Three Wins at MAWPC Weekend

THE RUNDOWN – Gannon vs. Salem
  • Final Score: Gannon 13, Salem 11
  • Records: Gannon (17-0) | Salem (7-13)
  • Location: Lott Natatorium – New London, Conn. (Saturday, October 27)
  • The Short Story: Gannon men's water polo began the weekend with its closest victory of MAWPC Weekend, posting a narrow 13-11 win over Salem on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon turned a 2-1 first quarter deficit into a 4-2 lead with three consecutive goals. Riley Hinkley (Meshoppen, Pa./Princeton), Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) and Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) all found the net for Gannon.
  • The Golden Knights strong first quarter helped them build a 6-4 lead, which they extended to 8-4 with the first two goals of the second quarter. Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored for the Golden Knights to begin the second frame.
  • Salem closed the first half with three straight goals.
  • Hinkley responded with a goal at 7:06 to begin the third quarter, but Salem countered back once again with back-to-back goals.
  • The Golden Knights posted four goals in a row to seize control of the game. Gannon's stretch of goals spanned from 3:46 left in the third quarter to 3:52 left in the fourth.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Five players had multiple goals for Gannon in a balanced offensive effort.
  • Bolmanski and Tony Squeglia led the way with three goals each.
  • Brett Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) made nine saves and passed out three assists to go along with two steals for Gannon.
  • Salem held a 32-30 edge in shots over the Golden Knights.
  • Gannon was 4-of-7 on powerplay chances.
  • The Golden Knights outscored Salem by one goal in each half with an 8-7 margin in the first half and a 5-4 second half.

  
THE RUNDOWN – Gannon vs. Mercyhurst
  • Final Score: Gannon 20, Mercyhurst 6
  • Records: Gannon (18-0) | Mercyhurst (12-8)
  • Location: Lott Natatorium – New London, Conn. (Saturday, October 27)
  • The Short Story: Gannon used an offensive surge in the first half to take a commanding 11-3 lead before cruising to a 20-6 victory over the Lakers in the second game of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon outscored Mercyhurst 6-1 in the opening frame to take control early. Sadikovic scored four of the Golden Knights first six goals.
  • Gannon continued applying the offensive pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Lakers 5-2 for an 11-3 lead at the half.
  • The second half was a similar story, with Gannon converting for nine goals. Sadikovic scored three straight goals to close the third quarter at 1:02 and 0:21 and begin the fourth quarter at 7:31.
 
GAME NOTES
  • In addition to the strong offensive effort, the Gannon defense shined. The Golden Knights did not allow more than two goals in any quarter of the game.
  • Sadikovic scored nine goals on 15 shots and set new career-high for goals, shots and points in a match. He also added three assists and three steals.
  • B. Rehrer was once again a consistent presence in net for Gannon with 18 saves. Nate Winkler (Southlake, Texas/Carroll Independent School District) also saw time in goal for the Golden Knights.
  • Despite the wide margin of victory, Gannon only had two more shot attempts (38-36) than the Lakers.
  • The Gannon powerplay was clicking throughout the match and the Golden Knights converted six of their 10 chances.
  • John Vieira (Erie, Pa/Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (McDowell)) found the net twice for Gannon while David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschool) scored once. In total, seven different players scored a goal for Gannon.

  
THE RUNDOWN – Gannon at Connecticut College
  • Final Score: Gannon 17, Connecticut College 10
  • Records: Gannon (19-0) | Connecticut College (4-18)
  • Location: Lott Natatorium – New London, Conn. (Sunday, October 28)
  • The Short Story: Gannon wrapped up the weekend against host Connecticut College and picked up a 17-10 win to remain unbeaten at 19-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon rolled to a quick 7-1 lead in the first quarter with goals from Hinkley, Sadikovic (3), Th. Squeglia (2) and Vieira.
  • Lucas Petzold (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) opened the second quarter with a goal and Gannon went on to lead 10-3 at the half.
  • Connecticut College outscored Gannon 4-3 in the third quarter but the Golden Knights responded by outscoring the Camels 4-3 in the final quarter.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Four players scored two or more goals for Gannon.
  • The Golden Knights outshot the Camels 31-25.
  • B. Rehrer, Winkler and Brenden Anderson (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) all saw time in goal for Gannon.
  • Gannon has recorded 10 or more goals in 13 straight games.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE                                       
  • Gannon has defeated Salem in all three meetings this season. Gannon posted an 18-12 win over the Tigers on September 29 and a 17-6 triumph on October 13.
  • The Golden Knights have scored 20 or more goals in a game six times this season.
  • Sadikovic currently ranks fourth on the Gannon single-season goals list with 66. He is fifth on the all-time career goals list at Gannon with 153 tallies.
  • Gannon defeated Mercyhurst, 11-6, on October 14 in the 2018 CWPA Division II Championships.
  • Gannon previously defeated Connecticut College, 20-8, on September 15.
  • Gannon has set a new program record for wins in a season with 19. The Golden Knights set the previous single-season wins record in 2017 with an 18-8 mark.
  • The Golden Knights are receiving votes in the MAWPC Top Five, released on October 24.
