  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights avenged a one-point loss to Seton Hill, 79-78, on Jan. 8, with a last second shot by Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) on Wednesday night. Mitchell hit the game-winner with 2.4 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Knights, 61-59, over the Griffins. Mitchell also scored her 1,000th point in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) needed just two points to reach 1,000 in her career and it didn't take long for her to get it. She deposited a bucket just two minutes into the game for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon trailed 14-11 after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Lady Knights pulled ahead midway through the second quarter. Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) nailed a three-pointer at the 5:52 mark to give Gannon a 22-21 lead.
  • Gannon's largest lead of the first half came at the halftime buzzer. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) lined up and buried a three to send the Lady Knights to the locker room up, 37-29.
  • GU pushed its lead to double-digits, 41-29, at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter after Braungart hit another long-range three.
  • The Lady Knights took a 49-41 advantage to the fourth quarter.
  • Seton Hill took its first lead of the second half when Jenna Kaufman made a pair of free throws to pull ahead, 50-49, with 5:04 remaining in the game.
  • M. Mitchell responded on the other end, getting the first Lady Knight' bucket of the fourth quarter at the 4:45 mark. Gannon pulled back ahead, 51-50.
  • The Lady Knights clung to a three-point lead, 57-54, with 1:38 remaining before Kaufman nailed the equalizer, tying the game at 57.
  • M. Mitchell earned a trip to the free throw line with 1:15 remaining, making both and putting Gannon back up, 59-57.
  • Seton Hill worked its way down the court with Cheyenne Trest getting fouled. Seh converted both free throws to again tie the game.
  • Gannon ended with the final possession a chance to win. M. Mitchell dribbled the clock down at the top of the key as LaCava set a screen. Mitchell dribbled left and pulled up at the elbow, burying the jumper with 2.4 seconds left.
  • Rourke stole the ensuing Griffin inbound, not allowing Seton Hill to get off its final shot.Gannon won, 61-59.
  
GAME NOTES
  • M. Mitchell collected her 1,000th career point in the first quarter against Seton Hill. Mitchell collected 175 points at NCAA Division II Ashland before netting the remaining 825 over the past two seasons in a Lady Knight uniform.
  • Gannon won its sixth straight game, all Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contests.
  • Gannon went 21-of-54 (38.9 percent) from the field while Seton Hill converted 20-of-65 shots (30.8 percent).
  • The Lady Knights collected 11 blocks in the game, the most since at least the 2002-03 season.
  • Gannon's 12-of-13 effort from the charity stripe represented the fifth time the Lady Knights shot at least 90 percent from the line.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) grabbed a career-most 12 rebounds, besting her previous high-water mark of 11 against Seton Hill on Jan. 8.
  • Braungart posted a career-high with 16 points, including three triples.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) (5), Rourke (4) and L. Tewes (2) each tallied career-best marks in blocks against the Griffins.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon improved to 13-2 when leading at halftime and 12-1 when scoring at least 60 points in the game.
  • The Lady Knights extended their conference-leading season free throw percentage to 79.9 percent.
  • Gannon won its third game in the final three seconds of regulation this season.
  • GU moved to 6-2 in five-point games, winning their last three in that range.
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues its two-game road swing with a game at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday.
  • It will be the first matchup with the Crimson Hawks this season after a snowstorm postponed a meeting on Dec. 31, 2017. That game will be made up on Monday, Feb. 12.
  • Saturday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
