THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights took down Millersville, 65-56, in the 11th annual Pink Zone game on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Hammermill Center. Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) led the Lady Knights with 20 points and nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon began the game on an 11-2 run capped off by a Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) triple at the 3:51 mark.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) connected on two three-pointers in the back half of the quarter, leading the Lady Knights with six points at the end of the first period. Gannon held a 17-8 lead.
  • The Lady Knights' lead hit double-digits, 19-8, as the Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) connected on a layup in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
  • Millersville went on a 8-0 run midway through the second period to close within five, 21-16, at the 3:26 mark.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) made the final bucket of the first half, hitting a three-pointer to send Gannon to the locker room up, 28-20. She paced the Lady Knights with nine points through the front half of the game.
  • Millersville tried to take its first lead of the game in the third quarter, closing to within one point, 29-28. LaCava answered though, hitting another bucket to go up, 31-28, at the 6:00 mark.
  • LaCava tallied 14 of the Lady Knights' 16 points in the third quarter, sending Gannon to the fourth quarter with a 44-36 advantage.
  • Gannon's lead was back to 10 points with 8:41 remaining in the fourth. Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) took a L. Tewes pass and deposited it for two.
  • Millersville wasn't done though, Jade Farquhar made a layup at the 4:31 mark to cut the Lady Knight' lead to 48-45.
  • Gannon kept a single-digit lead, however. L. Tewes hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining to keep Gannon on top, 57-49.
  • The Lady Knights went 10-for-10 in the final minute of the game from the free-throw line, pulling out a 65-56 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • LaCava posted her second 20+ point game of the season with 20 points and nine rebounds for Gannon.
  • The Lady Knights shot 46.5 percent from the field, making 20 of 43 shots. Millersville shot 31.7 percent, making 20 of 63 field goals.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) (11 pts.) and Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) (11 pts.) also scored in double-figures for Gannon.
  • Gannon went 21-of-23 from the free throw line, extending their conference best mark to 78.9 percent.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) tied a career-high with four steals in the game.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is winners of three-straight for the first time this season.
  • The Lady Knights are also two games over .500 for the first time in 2017-18.
  • Braungart tied a season-high with 11 points against Millersville.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon heads on the road Wednesday, January 24 for a PSAC Western Division battle at Slippery Rock.
  • Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
