Men's Water Polo Hangs Tough on First Day of Navy Invitational

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Men's Water Polo team hung with Johns Hopkins in the 2017 season opener in Annapolis, Md. The Golden Knights were tied at 11 in the fourth quarter but the Blue Jays tallied the go-ahead goal with just 3:12 remaining.

  • Nick Williams (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge Island) scored the contest's first goal with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Golden Knights and Blue Jays were deadlocked at two at the first break in play.
  • Williams and Jack Donnelly (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) combined to put the Golden Knights up 4-2 midway through the second period.
  • The two teams went to the half tied at five.
  • The Blue Jays used a flurry of goals in the third quarter to go up 11-9 headed to the final period.
  • Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) each tallied goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11.
  • Giorgio Cico gave Johns Hopkins its game-deciding goal with just 3:12 remaining in the match.

  • Gilberto Millan (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) registered his first goal of the season at the 2:27 mark of the second quarter.
  • Fordham went to the half with just a 4-3 lead.
  • The Rams came out of halftime with a six-goal surge to go ahead 10-4.
  • The Golden Knights won the fourth quarter by a 3-1 margin but couldn't close the gap, falling 11-7.
