King Scores 100th Career Goal as Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Almost Upsets No. 20 Seton Hill

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No. 20 Seton Hill 14, at Gannon 10

  • The Short Story: Five consecutive goals by No. 20 Seton Hill late in the first half eventually proved to be the difference as the visiting Griffins posted a 14-10 victory against Gannon Wednesday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams settled into a scoreless defensive affair for the first five minutes and 16 seconds until freshman Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored unassisted for a 1-0 Gannon lead.
  • After Seton Hill took a lead with consecutive goals, Gannon countered with two scores of its own to reassume a 3-2 advantage. Senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) tied the match off an assist from Rotondo at the 13:11 mark.
  • Junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) followed 39 seconds later with a free-position score to push the Lady Knights in front. The goal was King's 100th of her career.
  • Seton Hill then generated a 5-0 run that eventually proved to be the difference. The blitz gave the Griffins a 7-3 edge with 2:27 remaining in the first half.
  • Gannon managed one more score when Mitchell scored off a free-position attempt with 1:25 left on the clock, cutting the deficit to 7-4 at the intermission.
  • The Lady Knights were the first to score in the second half. King converted a pass from sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) two minutes and two seconds into the half, cutting the difference to 7-5.
  • Seton Hill responded with four consecutive goals to assume control at 11-5 with 20:12 to play.
  • Gannon continued to fight as King produced back-to-back unassisted tallies to climb back within 11-7 at the 14:27 mark.
  • The Griffins regained the six-goal advantage with a pair of goals by Katelyn Cressman.
  • Gannon finished strong with three of the final four goals. Sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), King and freshman Kennedy Walters (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) accounted for the scores before the final horn sounded for a 14-10 Seton Hill victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Both teams took 30 shots. Seton Hill had a 17-15 advantage during the first period, before Gannon flipped the chart with a 15-13 edge during the final 30 minutes.
  • Seton Hill generated a 19-16 advantage in ground balls.
  • Gannon held the upper hand in draw controls (16-10), fewest fouls (8-26) and fewest turnovers (10-14).
  • King led the Gannon offensive unit with five goals, one assist, seven draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Mitchell added two scores.
  • Rotondo, Bower and Walters completed the scoring with one goal each.
  • Sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) aided King in the middle with five draw controls.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her 11th consecutive start in goal, recording six saves. She also had six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

  • Seton Hill is ranked No. 20 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 20 Poll.
  • King became the 18th Lady Knight in program history to score 100 goals when she found the back of the net with 12:32 left in the first half.
  • Seton Hill tied the all-time series with its third consecutive victory after Gannon won the first three contests in the series.
  • King moved in sixth place all-time at Gannon since 2004 in ground balls with 140, moving past Christina Alexander (2006-09) and Shannon Pagano (2004-07).
  • Gannon reached double digits in goals for the fifth time this season.
  • King jumped into seventh place all-time at Gannon since 2004 in caused turnovers with 64, moving past Pagano and Joanne Heintz (2004-07).
  • Capozzo captured at least five draw controls for the fourth time in 2017.
  • King won at least seven draw controls for the third time this season.
