GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was played on even terms with both teams scoring eight goals and Mercyhurst producing a slight 17-15 edge in shots.
  • After the Lakers scored the first goal, Gannon earned a 2-1 lead following consecutive scores from sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) and senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta). Junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) assisted on both goals.
  • Mercyhurst tied the contest at two, before Gannon grabbed its last lead at 3-2 on King's first goal of the afternoon at the 24:42 mark.
  • After the two teams battled to ties at four and five, Mercyhurst ripped off three consecutive goals to forge ahead 8-5 with 7:05 left in the first half.
  • Gannon countered with three scores during the final two minutes and 27 seconds of the first half, tying the contest at eight heading into the halftime intermission.
  • King started the rally with a free-position goal at the 2:27 mark. Sophomore Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) followed 25 seconds later, finishing a pass from King.
  • Sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) capped the blitz with 48 seconds left, scoring the tying goal unassisted.
  • Mercyhurst regained its composure at halftime and responded with the first three goals of the second half.
  • King momentarily stopped the run with an unassisted score, but the Lakers followed with five more goals to assume a 16-9 advantage with 22:10 to play.
  • Senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) single-handily tried to rally the troops at that point, scoring three straight goals. King assisted on the first and last scores, pulling the Lady Knights within 16-12.
  • Mercyhurst continued the match of runs with three straight of its own to regain a seven-goal lead at 19-12 with 14:40 remaining.
  • Gannon was never able to get closer than five goals the rest of the way.
