Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Concludes Three-Match Road Swing with Loss at East Stroudsburg

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team fell behind East Stroudsburg 6-0 and was never able to pull closer than four goals throughout the rest of the afternoon before dropping an 18-9 decision Saturday afternoon at the Warriors' Whitenight Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • East Stroudsburg jumped on Gannon early with the first six goals of the contest.
  • Gannon scored its first goal 13 minutes and 23 seconds into the match when freshman Kennedy Walters (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy).
  • Sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) followed with an unassisted goal, cutting the deficit to 6-2 at the 12:48 mark.
  • East Stroudsburg countered with three consecutive scores and four of the first half's final five goals. Lauren Green scored unassisted with one second left on the clock to push the Warriors into the halftime locker room with a 10-3 lead.
  • Gannon evened the playing field during the second half, but was out-scored 8-6 in the final 30 minutes.
  • After East Stroudsburg scored first, the Lady Knights drew within 11-5 on back-to-back goals. Capozzo tallied the first off an assist from sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), before King converted a free-position shot.
  • East Stroudsburg generated three goals in the span of two minutes and 57 seconds to bump its advantage to 14-5 at the 20:58 mark.
  • Gannon countered with three straight scores from King, Bower and senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) to climb back within six goals at 14-8.
  • However, East Stroudsburg iced the match with four of the last five goals to secure an 18-9 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • East Stroudsburg out-shot Gannon 35-22, including a 20-9 edge during the first half.
  • The Warriors also generated advantages in ground balls (23-17) and fewest turnovers (20-23).
  • Gannon had fewer fouls (18-23) while both teams won 14 draw controls.
  • King headlined the Gannon offensive unit with three goals, two assists, five points, a season-high nine draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Mitchell was the only other Lady Knight with multiple goals, scoring twice.
  • Capozzo, Bower, Martinelli and Walters completed the scoring with one goal each. 
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her eighth consecutive start in goal, recording four saves during each half for a total of eight. She also tied King for the team lead with a season-high three ground balls.

  • Gannon was playing the final contest of a three-match road swing.
  • East Stroudsburg is the second Gannon opponent during the last four matches to commit 20 turnovers.
  • King moved into Gannon's top 15 since 2004 in ground balls with 123, tying Kimberly Neagle (2011-14) for 15th place.
  • Tate recorded at least eight saves for the fourth time this season.
  • King caused multiple turnovers for the third time this year.
