Gannon Women's Basketball Falls in Exhibition Game at Indiana

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball hung tough with the Indiana Hoosiers through the first half of Monday's exhibition game. Indiana used a 26-5 third-quarter run to jump out to an 82-38 victory. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) paced the Lady Knights with 11 points and five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Indiana scored the first 12 points of the game before the Lady Knights returned fire. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) connected on a three-pointer, followed by a Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) jumper to claw back to 12-5.
  • Gannon freshman Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) scored the final points of the first quarter and Gannon trailed 18-8 at the first break.
  • M. Mitchell had the Lady Knights back to within single-digits, 24-15, midway through the second quarter after a hard-fought layup in the paint.
  • Rourke and M. Mitchell led GU in scoring at halftime, tallying seven points each.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) opened up the third quarter with a long-range triple. She used that three along with four free throws in the game to finish with seven points for Gannon.
  • Indiana used a 26-5 run in the third quarter to take control, 61-27, headed to the fourth quarter.
  • S. Mitchell hit one of Gannon's five three-pointers just 35 seconds into the final quarter. She kicked in six points for GU.
  • M. Mitchell closed out the Lady Knights scoring with a pair of free throws after she was hacked by IU's Bre Wickware as time ticked down in the fourth quarter.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon was playing its only exhibition game of the season.
  • M. Mitchell was the only Lady Knight in double-figures with 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.
  • Gannon made 12-of-55 shots from the field and connected on 9-of-12 free throws. Indiana converted 30-of-60 shots and 15-of-24 free throws.
  • Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Tyra Buss, led five Indiana double-figure scorers with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven steals.
  • The Lady Knights pressured Indiana into 18 turnovers but committed 26 of their own on the offensive end.
  • Nine Gannon players saw action with eight logging double-digit minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Monday's contest was Gannon's first exhibition since playing at the University of Dayton on November 6, 2015.
  • Gannon is 2-6 all-time in exhibition games against NCAA Division I schools.
  • The Lady Knights swept a pair of exhibition games at Kent State (70-61) and the University of Buffalo (63-53) in 2012.
