Gannon Women's Basketball Opens 2017-18 With Victory Over Elizabeth City State, 68-50

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball opened the 2017-18 season with a victory over the Elizabeth City State Vikings, 68-50, at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) / Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Challenge on Friday night (Nov. 10) in Charlotte, N.C.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) made the first bucket of the 2017-18 basketball season with a triple try off a Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) pass.
  • Gannon was the first to hit double digits as Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) connected on an and-one basket. The Lady Knights had an early 10-7 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) finished off the first quarter with a bucket to seal a 12-8 quarter for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon began the second quarter on a 15-4 run that was capped off by a M. Mitchell three-ball. Gannon took a double-digit lead, 27-14.
  • The Lady Knights went to the break with a 30-16 advantage over the Vikings.
  • Elizabeth City State closed back to within single digits with a 10-5 run to begin the third quarter, Gannon leading 35-26.
  • Gannon extended the lead back out to 17 points with a layup from Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) at the 2:18 mark of the third quarter, Gannon up 47-30.
  • The Lady Knights took a 49-36 lead to the fourth quarter.
  • The Vikings never got closer than 12 points in the final eight minutes of play. Gannon closed out the game with its largest lead. LaCava nailed a shot with 1:14 remaining, sealing a 68-50 victory for Gannon.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon scored 68 points on 28-of-73 (.384) from the field.
  • The Lady Knights hit nine triples in 30 attempts.
  • Mitchell produced a 14-point, six-assist game for the Lady Knights, hitting four three-pointers.
  • The Lady Knights tallied 16 assists on their 28 made baskets.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) was the only Lady Knight to record double-digit rebounds with 10.
