Lady Knights' Run at No.13-Ranked Virginia Union Falls Short, 65-51

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball gave the Virginia Union Lady Panthers all they could handle in a non-conference affair on Saturday, Nov. 25. The Lady Panthers end up on top, however, 65-51. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led the Lady Knights with a season-high 17 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon's Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) netted the first bucket of the game with a layup at the 9:15 mark.
  • The Lady Knights made the lead 10-6 after Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) connected on a jumper.
  • Gannon held a slim 12-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
  • The lead was back to four, 14-10 after Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) hit a layup to open the second quarter.
  • The Lady Panthers followed with a 14-2 run that put Virginia Union up 24-16 with 3:15 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Gannon cut the deficit by a point, 35-28, at halftime.
  • The Lady Knights kept pace in the third quarter, the gap staying between 5-10 points. Gannon headed to the fourth quarter down, 51-41.
  • Rourke opened the fourth quarter with a layup to get Gannon within 51-43. The eight-point spread was as close as the Lady Knights would get in the fourth.
  • Rourke, LaCava, Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) all tallied points in the final quarter but the Lady Knights couldn't overcome its deficit, falling 65-51.
     
GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights were 37.1% from the field (19-of-51), while Virginia Union was 23 of 59 (39.0%).
  • Virginia Union edged Gannon, 12-10, in points off turnovers.
  • Both teams shot 80+ percent from the free-throw line. Gannon was 5-of-6 (83.3%) while Virginia Union was 13-of-16 (81.3%).
  • The 65 points that Gannon held Virginia Union to represented the second-lowest point total of the season for the Lady Panthers.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Virginia Union was ranked 13th in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) top 25 rankings.
  • Rourke posted her fifth double-figures scoring performance in six games this season. The 17 points also represented a season-high and was one off her career-high of 18 against Seton Hill last season.
  • M. Mitchell posted her fourth straight game with at least 14 points.
  • Mitchell hit four threes in the game, lifting her to second among PSAC athletes in three-pointers made with 16 this season.
