Sadikovic Delivers Game-Winning Goal In Overtime; Gannon Downs Mercyhurst For Seventh at MAWPC Championships

The Short Story: The Gannon Men's Water Polo finished its 2017 season with an overtime victory over Mercyhurst, 13-12, for seventh place at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championships in Annapolis, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jack Donnelly (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) scored the first goal of the match at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter. Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) and Nick Williams (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge Island) followed with goals to give Gannon a 3-0 lead after eight minutes.
Connor Schmitz scored the first Mercyhurst goal in the opening seconds of the second quarter.
Gannon followed with three straight goals, another two from Donnelly. The Golden Knights went up 6-1.
Mercyhurst closed the second quarter with two goals and trimmed the deficit to 6-3 by halftime.
Mercyhurst outscored Gannon 8-5 in the second half and forced overtime, tied at 11.
After a scoreless first overtime, Mercyhurst's Ryan Witoslawski scored with just 53 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Gannon needed to score in the final moments and Sadikovic delivered the equalizer with 17 seconds left, forcing a third overtime.
The third overtime was sudden death and Sadikovic notched the game-winning goal for the Golden Knights with 2:09 remaining in the overtime.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Gannon beat Mercyhurst four times in a single season for the first time in program history. Gannon defeated Mercyhurst for the CWPA Division II Championship and MAWPC-West Region Championship this season.
The Golden Knights extended their program record for wins in a season with 18.
Gannon also had its longest winning-streak in program history with 16 victories in a row.
