Gannon Men's Water Polo Snaps Winning-Streak With Three-Goal Defeat to George Washington

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Men's Water Polo fell to George Washington at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championships on Friday, Nov. 17. The loss snapped the Golden Knights' 16-match winning streak that dated back to Sept. 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) goal at the 5:39 mark of the first quarter.
  • George Washington knotted the match up at one with a goal two minutes later.
  • The Colonials held a 3-1 lead after the first eight minutes.
  • Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) scored the only goal of the second quarter and Gannon trimmed the deficit to 3-2 at halftime.
  • Jack Donnelly (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) tied the match up at three in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
  • The Colonials went on to score four of the next six goals and took a 7-5 lead to the final quarter.
  • Gilberto Millan (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) pulled the Golden Knights within one, 7-6, at the 7:28 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • George Washington followed with back-to-back goals and pulled out to a 9-6 lead with 5:06 remaining.
  • Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored his second goal of the match at the 4:35 mark but it wasn't enough as George Washington took the match, 10-7.
 
MATCH NOTES
  • Gannon connected on 7-of-34 shots from the field and was 4-of-9 on powerplays.
  • George Washington shot 10-of-36 overall and 3-of-8 on powerplays.
  • Millan and Squeglia led the Golden Knights with two goals apiece.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon snapped its streak of consecutive wins at 16. The Golden Knights 16-match winning streak was the longest in school history.
  • The Golden Knights were the No. 7-seed in the tournament while George Washington was the No. 2 seed.
