Gannon Women's Basketball Holds Fourth-Quarter Lead, Comes Up Short in Final Minutes at Johnson C. Smith

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball had a fourth-quarter lead but couldn't hang on as Johnson C. Smith rallied for a 62-51 victory on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) / Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Challenge.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon knocked down several early shots, including back-to-back three-pointers by Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), taking a 14-8 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter.
  • Gannon closed out the opening period, up 15-11, after Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) split a pair of free throws. LaCava had 10 points in the game.
  • Rourke and LaCava had the first six points of the second quarter for Gannon. Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) got in the scoring party with a pair of free throws at the 1:56 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Lady Knights and Golden Bulls went to halftime tied at 28.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) began the second half with a long-range three, pushing Gannon back out to a 31-28 lead.
  • Elise Torrence (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) knocked down a jumper at the 4:50 mark of the third quarter, giving Gannon its largest lead of the second half at 36-30.
  • From that point, the Golden Bulls went on a 13-4 run over the final four-plus minutes to take a 43-40 lead to the fourth quarter.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) tied the game back at 43 in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter while LaCava followed with a go-ahead layup.
  • Johnson C. Smith tied it back up at 45, followed by another three to go up, 48-45, with 6:47 remaining.
  • The Golden Bulls wouldn't relinquish the lead from that point on. Johnson C. Smith outscored Gannon 17-6 in the final seven minutes.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon connected on 16-of-46 (34.8 %) shots from the field, while Johnson C. Smith hit 21 of its 56 shots (37.5 %).
  • The Lady Knights hit eight three-pointers and went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
  • The turnover battle was a wash as both teams committed 20 turnovers apiece.
  • The Golden Bulls held a 33-12 edge in bench points.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon and Johnson C. Smith met for the second time, each team winning once.
  • Johnson C. Smith finished the tournament, 2-0, after defeating Cheyney, 83-54, in its season-opening game.
