  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's water polo team completed a perfect weekend with a 16-12 victory over Mercyhurst on Sunday, Oct. 15. The Golden Knights captured the CWPA Division II Championship with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nick Williams (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge Island) tallied the first goal of the match just 41 seconds into the contest.
  • Mercyhurst edged ahead, 4-3, by the end of the first quarter.
  • Tied at six, Gannon reeled off three-straight goals from Williams, Jake Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) and Riley Hinkley (Meshoppen, Pa./Princeton). Gannon used a 6-2 advantage in quarter to take a 9-6 lead to halftime.
  • Mercyhurst used two goals at the beginning of the third quarter to inch back within 9-8.
  • Another J. Rehrer goal began a 5-0 run that pushed Gannon out to a 14-8 lead by the end of the third quarter.
  • J. Rehrer and Jack Donnelly (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) tallied fourth quarter goals for Gannon as they went on to win, 16-12, securing the Division II Championship.
     
MATCH NOTES
  • J. Rehrer led both sides in scoring with four goals, also marking a career-high.
  • Williams and Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) each recorded a hat trick with three goals.
  • Junior Brett Rehrer picked up the victory between the pipes, recording 10 saves.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The CWPA Division II Championship went to the Golden Knights for only the second time since the tournament started in 2003.
  • Gannon won the championship for the first time since 2014.
  • Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) was named the tournament MVP.
  • Z. Sadikovic, Williams, Gilberto Millan (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) and Donnelly were named to the all-tournament team.
  • Salem International (2-1) placed second, Mercyhurst (1-2) took third and McKendree (0-3) came home fourth.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will head to Connecticut College on Oct. 21 & 22 for the second of two Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) weekends.
  • The Golden Knights will see La Salle (1 p.m.) and Connecticut College (6 p.m.) on Saturday, and  Washington & Jefferson on Sunday (10:30 a.m.).
