Gannon Baseball Team Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth With Split at Clarion

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team erupted for a season-high 17 runs and clinched its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament spot since 2013 with a 17-5 victory Saturday afternoon in the opener of a PSAC doubleheader at Clarion. The Golden Eagles rallied for an 11-10 eighth-inning win the nightcap to earn the split.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon wasted little time jumping ahead, cruising to an 8-0 lead after two innings. The Golden Knights immediately put up five runs on five hits during their first at-bat.
  • Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) started the rally with a two-run single. Senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) then drew a bases-loaded walk, before junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) drove home two runs with a single.
  • Gannon increased its lead to 8-0 on an RBI double by Cardy, RBI ground-out by sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and RBI single by Beer in the second.
  • Clarion got on the board with three runs in the third, but Gannon countered with three of its own during the top of the fifth.
  • After the Golden Eagles plated two more runs during their fifth-inning at-bat, Gannon put the game away with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty), sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), Cardy and Restuccia recorded three hits each.
  • Redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Restuccia scored three runs apiece.
  • Cardy and Restuccia produced four and three RBIs, respectively.
  • Junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) improved to 3-2 with 6 2/3 innings of work, striking out eight and walking three.
  • Freshman Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) came out of the bullpen to get the last out.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.
  • The Golden Knights clinched their first PSAC Tournament spot since 2013 with the victory.
  • It will be the program's third PSAC Tournament appearance since joining the conference prior to the 2008-09 academic year.
  • Gannon set a program record with its 16th conference victory, surpassing the 2013 squad that went 15-9 in PSAC action.
  • The Golden Knights scored first for the 33rd time in the opening 40 games.
  • Wiesen broke Gannon's all-time record for career runs with 127, breaking the previous mark of 125 set by Eric Harpster (2006-09).
  • Sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 with his sixth career triple.
  • Gannon tied its season-high in runs, previously duplicated during a 17-11 home victory against Indiana (Pa.) on March 17.
  • The Golden Knights scored double-digit runs for the 12th time.
  • Gannon produced at least 19 hits in a game for the third time this season and double digits for the 20th time.
  • Every Gannon starter recorded a hit and scored a run. Eight of the nine starters had an RBI. 
  • Cardy had a season-high four RBIs for the fourth time in 2016.
  • Restuccia scored a career-high three runs.
  • DeVita had three runs in a game for the fourth time this season and fifth time in his career. 
  • Benack recorded a career-high three RBIs for the third time this year.
  • Morrison made his Gannon debut in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon immediately plated three runs during the top of the first inning. The first two runs scored on RBI singles by Benack and Cardy, before the third tally scored on an error.
  • Clarion exploded for five runs in the second to assume a 5-3 lead.
  • Gannon battled back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) singled home the first run and Restuccia scored on a passed ball to tie the game at five.
  • Tied at six, Gannon forged ahead with two runs during the top of the seventh inning. Cox tripled home Beer with the go-ahead run and scored on Restuccia's single.
  • Clarion kept fighting and generated two runs during its at-bat, including the tying run on a two-out single.
  • Gannon went right back to work with two more runs during the top of the eighth. Cardy's RBI single pushed Wiesen across the plate with the go-ahead run. A Beer RBI single later scored Benack for a 10-8 lead.
  • However, Clarion answered again during the bottom of the frame with three runs to win it. Two were unearned thanks to three Gannon errors. An error on a failed pick-off attempt with two outs allowed the winning run to score.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Wiesen, Cardy and Cox led the attack with three hits each.
  • Freshman Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City), Morrison and junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) covered the eight innings on the mound. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest NCBWA Atlantic Regional Poll.
  • The Golden Knights scored first for the 34th time in 41 games.
  • Gannon played its fifth extra-inning game of the season, dropping to 2-3.
  • The Golden Knights committed seven errors for the first time since having seven during an 18-13 victory against Stonehill on March 3, 2006.
  • Gannon scored double-digit runs for the 13th time.
  • The Golden Knights produced double-digit hits for the 20th time.
  • Gannon had double-digit runs during both games of a doubleheader for the fourth time this season.
  • Wiesen became the second Golden Knight in program history to record 200 career hits.
  • Cox moved into Gannon's all-time top five with his seventh career triple.
  • Wiesen tied Chris Miller (2005-08) for ninth place all-time at Gannon with his 82nd career RBI. He also moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 in games played (168) and top 15 in doubles (26).
  • Wiesen and Cardy extended the team's two best current hit streaks to eight and six games, respectively.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action Friday, April 29 at Seton Hill.
  • The PSAC Western Division doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Gannon has played Seton Hill tough at home over the years, sweeping a doubleheader in 2014 and splitting a twinbill last season.
  • However, the Griffins are 4-0 against the Golden Knights at home since joining the conference.
  • Gannon can still finish anywhere between first to fourth in the PSAC Western Division depending on results from the final weekend of conference action April 29-30.
