Gannon Baseball Team Ties Program's Single-Season Victory Record During Twinbill Split at Slippery Rock

  • The Short Story: Freshman Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) combined to limited Slippery Rock a pair of runs during a 7-2 victory as the Gannon baseball team earned a split of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader at SRU's Jack Crutchfield Park. The decision tied Gannon's all-time single-season victory total (24).

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Slippery Rock wasted little time putting the opener out of reach, exploding for 14 runs during its first at-bat. The Rock hit three home runs and sent 18 batters to the plate.
  • Gannon tried to rally with three runs during the top of the second inning. The runs scored on an RBI ground-out by sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville), a wild pitch and RBI single by senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty).
  • Slippery Rock answered with three runs during its second-inning at-bat, before adding one in the fourth and four in the sixth.
  • Gannon tallied its final runs on Wiesen's lead-off home run in the fifth and redshirt freshman Nate Cardy's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) RBI double in the seventh.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Wiesen went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs out of the lead-off spot.
  • Cardy finished 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
  • Wiesen and Cardy recorded seven of Gannon's 10 hits.
  • Four different Golden Knights toed the rubber during the opener.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.
  • Wiesen recorded his first career four-hit game while producing his team-best 19th multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Cardy had at least three hits in a game for the sixth time in 2016. In the process, he recorded his 15th multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Wiesen moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 in RBIs with 77, tying Clint Page (1997-00) for 10th place.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • After three scoreless innings, Gannon broke the seal during the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) led off with a single up the middle, before moving to third on an error during a failed pick-off attempt and a balk. He then scored on Cox's single up the middle.
  • The Golden Knights broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. The big blow was a Wiesen two-run, two-out single that pushed the Gannon lead to 6-0. The previous runs scored during the inning on an RBI single by Cardy, sacrifice fly by senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) and RBI fielder's choice by junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic).
  • Slippery Rock broke the shutout with a single run during the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Gannon added an insurance run during the seventh when redshirt senior Mark DeVita's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) sacrifice fly scored Restuccia.
  • The Rock posted one more run during its final at-bat  to account for the final 7-2 score.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Oruch went 3-for-4 with two runs.
  • Cox finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
  • Wiesen, sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Cardy added two hits each.
  • Yough improved to 4-1 with five innings of work, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out one and walked none.
  • DiPaolo finished the game with two innings out of the bullpen, He surrendered one run on three hits while striking out two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Wiesen recorded his team-best 20th multiple-hit game and eighth multiple-RBI game of the campaign.
  • Gannon dropped into fourth place in the PSAC Western Division with eight regular-season games remaining. The squad is one game behind Seton Hill and California (Pa.) for second place.
