Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive By Knocking Off The Rock

  • The Short Story: Freshman Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) had a career-high 16 saves while sophomores Kierstyn Haight (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) and Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) scored five goals each as the Gannon women's lacrosse team knocked off Slippery Rock 14-11 Tuesday evening at McConnell Family Stadium. As a result, the Lady Knights remain in the playoff hunt with three regular-season matches remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to generate more than two consecutive goals during the back-and-forth affair until Gannon's decisive run in the second half.
  • Slippery Rock held two-goal leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 6-4.
  • Consecutive goals by King and Haight forged a 6-6 tie with 6:41 remaining in the first half.
  • The Rock regained the lead momentarily, before the Lady Knights found the back of the net twice during the final 79 seconds.
  • After Haight's second goal tied the match at seven, King scored with 49 seconds left to give Gannon an 8-7 lead at the intermission. It represented the Lady Knights' first lead of the evening.
  • Slippery Rock created the contest's fifth tie 4:18 into the second half when Ally Culhane's tally drew even at nine.
  • Gannon then produced the only run of more than two goals the entire night. All three came off the stick of Haight, including two off free position attempts. Her final one gave the home squad a 12-9 edge with 10:57 to play.
  • Slippery Rock battled back within 12-11 at the 6:56 mark.
  • However, junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) answered 41 seconds later off an assist from King.
  • Gannon won the ensuing draw control and held the ball for almost four minutes until junior Yohana Romero (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) added an insurance goal at the 2:36 mark.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon won despite being out-shot 35-27. The Rock also won the battle for draw controls (15-12) and fewest turnovers (15-16).
  • The Lady Knights held advantages in ground balls (20-15) and fewest fouls (19-29).
  • King and Haight led both sides in scoring with five goals each. King also recorded eight draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Junior Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) had two goals, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Mitchell and Romero completed the scoring with one goal each.
  • Junior Katie Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) added three ground balls on the defensive side of the ball.
  • Freshman Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) made her eighth consecutive start in goal, recording 16 saves. She turned away nine shots during the first half, before adding seven more saves in the final 30 minutes.

  • Gannon snapped a brief two-match losing streak against Slippery Rock to increase its lead in the all-time series to 8-2.
  • The Lady Knights improved to 4-1 against the Rock at McConnell Family Stadium.
