Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Falls at No. 13 Lock Haven

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The No. 13 Lock Haven women's lacrosse team shut out Gannon 13-0 during the first half and cruised to a 17-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field. 

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lock Haven controlled play from the onset, scoring all 13 first-half goals.
  • The Bald Eagles led 4-0 after the first 10 minutes, 8-0 after 20 minutes and 13-0 at the intermission.
  • Lock Haven opened the second half with four more goals to assume a 17-0 advantage with 14:33 to play.
  • Gannon managed to get on the board at the 13:20 mark when junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) scored off an assist from sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy).
  • Freshman Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) followed with back-to-back unassisted goals, including the first on a free position shot.
  • Junior Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and freshman Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) then added two more unassisted scores during the final 5:51 to account for the 17-5 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Lock Haven won every statistical category - shots (38-13), ground balls (13-8), draw controls (16-5), fewest fouls (11-12) and fewest turnovers (7-10).
  • Bower led the Gannon scoring attack with a pair of goals.
  • Mozingo, Mitchell and Shields accounted for the remainder of the Lady Knights' scoring.
  • King finished with three draw controls and one assist.
  • Mozingo had three ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with her goal.
  • Freshman Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) made her ninth consecutive start in goal, recording 13 saves. She turned away nine shots during the first half, before adding four more saves in the final 30 minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Lock Haven is ranked 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 20 Poll.
  • The Bald Eagles have defeated the Gannon 14 straight times and lead the all-time series 16-6.
  • Gannon will now need to win its final two regular-season matches and get help from around the league to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
  • Martinelli reached double digits in saves for the second consecutive match and fifth time this season.
  • Bower entered Saturday's match with two goals through 14 matches, before doubling that total against Lock Haven.
  • Mozingo had at least three ground balls for the seventh time in 2016 and caused multiple turnovers for the sixth time.
  • Gannon's last victory in the all-time series against Lock Haven was a 13-12 verdict April 14, 2004 on the road.
