Gannon Softball Team Concludes NTC Games in Florida with 8-0 Shutout of St. Anselm

  • The Short Story: A fifth-inning grand slam by freshman Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) backed junior Olivia Gumbita's (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) third shutout of the week as the Gannon softball team concluded its stay at the National Training Center (NTC) Games in Clermont, Florida Saturday afternoon with an 8-0 five-inning victory against St. Anselm.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon scored the only three runs it would need during the top of the second inning. Senior Rachel deGuia (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) led off the inning with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and scored on Morgan's single to left field. Two batters later, sophomore Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) doubled home freshman Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and Morgan for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Lady Knights ended the game early with a five-run fifth inning. After two St. Anselm errors, senior Alyssa Bates' (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) RBI single scored sophomore Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep).
  • Two batters later, Morgan drilled a two-out grand slam to left field to give the Lady Knights an 8-0 lead.
  • Gumbita then retired St. Anselm in order during the bottom of the fifth inning to cap the victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Morgan finished 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBIs.
  • deGuia scored twice while Salerno drove home a pair.
  • Gumbita tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out two and walking none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gumbita recorded her 29th career complete game and sixth of the season. She recorded her third shutout of the week and eighth of her career, lowering her earned run average to 1.47 through 38 innings.
  • Morgan's career-high five RBIs represented the second five-RBI performance by a Lady Knight this week. Archambeault drove home five runs during a 14-2 victory against Lake Superior State on Thursday.
  • deGuia extended her hit streak to four games with a lead-off double during the second inning.
  • Gumbita walked zero batters for the fourth time in six starts this season. She hasn't walked a batter during her last 15 1/3 innings.
  • Six different Lady Knights scored a run.
  • Gannon's five-run fifth inning was its third five-run frame of the week.
  • The Lady Knights finished the NTC Games with a 6-5 record for the second consecutive season.
