Gannon Softball Team Splits Sixth Consecutive Twinbill Behind Gumbita's Three-Hit Shutout

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team split its sixth consecutive doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Salem Invitational in Salem, Virginia. The Lady Knights opened play with a 7-0 shutout of Fairmont State behind junior Olivia Gumbita's (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) three-hit shutout, before falling 5-2 against Wheeling Jesuit.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon scored runs during its first three at-bats to open a 4-0 lead.
  • Junior Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) started the scoring with a two-out home run to center field during the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Lady Knights added a second run on singles by freshman Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda), freshman Ashley Bower (Middleport, N.Y. Royalton-Hartland) and sophomore Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) in the second inning.
  • Two more runs came quickly during the third frame. Moran led off with a single, before senior Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) blasted a two-run homer.
  • Gannon iced the victory with three runs in the fifth. Morgan drove home the first run with an RBI fielder's choice. Sophomore Katie Eckelberry (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) followed with a pinch-hit, two-run single.
  • Meanwhile, Gumbita was cruising. She set down 10 straight hitters until allowing a single with one out in the seventh.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Moran led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 showing, scoring three runs and driving home one.
  • Bates finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs, one walk and one run.
  • Eckelberry had two RBIs with a single in her only plate appearance as a pinch hitter.
  • Gumbita improved to 6-1 with a three-hit shutout, striking out eight with no walks over seven innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gumbita recorded her 30th career complete game and seventh of the season.
  • Moran recorded at least three hits in a game for the fourth time during her career. She tied a career-high with three runs for the third time.
  • Gumbita posted her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season, extending her scoreless streak to 12 1/3 innings.
  • Gannon improved to 3-0 all-time against Fairmont State.
  • Gumbita walked zero batters for the third consecutive outing and fifth time this season. She has not walked a batter during her last 22 1/3 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • After three scoreless innings, Wheeling Jesuit finally broke through with a run during the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Cardinals added another run in the fourth and extended their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the sixth.
  • Gannon was hitless through six innings until sophomore Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led off the seventh with a double to left field. Three batters later, Morgan drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the Lady Knights' first run. An RBI ground-out by Eckelberry accounted for a second run, before a strikeout ended the game.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Martinez's double in the seventh was Gannon's lone hit.
  • Freshman Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) started the nightcap on the mound, logging 5 1/3 innings with one strikeout and no walks.
  • Senior Alison Benz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Mount Mercy Academy) pitched 2/3 innings of relief without allowing a run.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Martinez's hit saved Gannon from being no-hit for the third time this season.
  • Wheeling Jesuit defeated the Lady Knights for the second time this season, posting a 4-3 victory February 28 at the National Training Center (NYC) Games in Clermont, Florida.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues play at the Salem Invitational Saturday, March 11 with a pair of games against Concord (10 a.m.) and Glenville State (2 p.m.).
